today's lychee refill
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:27:31 AM »
so sunday's 18 pounds of mauritius lasted until monday! (although I did give around 5-6 pounds to a friend)
so had to get another 36 pounds today ($80).
unfortunately, the brewsters shown in the bottom draw will get badly neglected now that mauritius are in full swing.

this may last us through memorial day but probably not

I finally found a place here in So Cal that has lychees for $2.5/lb, if bought in bulk even cheaper, they also are selling rambutan, and lot of other tropical fruits from Asia/Mexico/US.  I will do a post with pics later.

Lycheeluva has made me jelous now! I am yet to taste lychee this season! Damn it!

Your fingers must get raw from peeling all them lychees.

no fingers needed. quick bite at the bottom of the lychee to break the skin - then apply pressure at the top of  lychee to squeeze who lychee into gob. admittedly, it takes years of practice to be able to do this in one ninja-quick fluid movement without spilling any juice on self

While I prefer the peel method...I hope you wash them fruits that come from Mexico before the bite method.  Heck, I would wash any of them if I were using the bite method...

Rob, that's a good point i think. Who knows what they spray in Mexico on those lychee fruits during the growing season? Then there is the so called "post harvest" treatment. It's certainly not just a matter of bacteria lurking, as Tim seems to think.

Inspired by Lycheeluva, I too took a bath in Lychees too! Here in Little Saigon Orange County super market I got 20 lbs for $43, they retail it $2.99/lb otherwise.  These are freaking sweek kids, seed is a bit think but flavour is amazing. Much better than what I got last year.

So that's not fair...why are we in FL  4-6 weeks behind on our Lychee season than every one else?

A.) LL and Behl are buying Mexico lychees; and B.) I have, as have others, been eating local grown (in SFla) lychees for the past 10 days or so...

Even if you're playing, most people stick em directly into the mouth, like you describe. Personally i'm a lot less concerned over bacteria than pesticides, but both can knock you down, especially if you're already have weak immune system. Anyway, being sick is not much fun!

Lychees are everywhere here. Price already dropped to $2 a pound and will probably drop a bit further. Even picked a box of my own Brewsters today, very tasty!
