Santol flowering in South California
« on: July 05, 2015, 11:12:23 PM »
Finally the day came, I got my first Santol flowers on my tree. Has anyone got this far or fruited one outside in California? Any hope of a fruit?

Congratulations Mark! How large is your tree? Mine is about 5ft so I have a bit of time ahead of me I believe. Very cool. Chris

The Santol I have is a seedling in a 25 gallon, it has been outside since I got it maybe 4 years ago from TT. I suspect it is probably 7 or 8 years old. In the winter it does lose quite a few leaves and does die back at the tips. I'll eventually put it in the spot that my 12 foot coffee tree is taking up, I believe that is the warmest part of the yard. I think my largest "Lucosteen" will work in that area also.

Very exciting Mark!  I hope that your tree does set some fruit.

Me too...hope they set fruit for you. Though most books say santols are self pollinating, there are some trees here that seem to be self sterile. So having another tree around definitely improves chances of fruits setting.

Cross your fingers Mark , I planted 2 at sealevel in 2 friends places , one each , I used to have 2 trees at my orchard , 4 - 5 meters tall that died one after the other for unknown reason .
The trees at my friends places do very well , gorgeous and enormous trees , lots and lots of flowering but only a few fruits after several years of flowering and no fruit set . So I agree with Oscar , they could use a companion ...

Unknown reasons? Luc you posted long time ago that the ants ate the santol leaves. I guess you have leaf cutter ants there in Mexico?
