Info on Cinnamon Apple (Pouteria Hypogauca). . .
« on: February 16, 2016, 12:08:52 PM »

I picked up a seedling the other day at a Costa Rica vivero simply because I liked its name, Pan de Vida (Bread of Life). Its botanical name is Pouteris Hypogauca. The folks at the nursery couldn't give me any info on the species, and I found very little info on the internet about it other than it's called Cinnamon Apple and is a small to medium sized tree. Before I plant it I would like to know where and how to plant it and if the fruit would actually be worth the trouble. Thanks for any help!

Its a funny fruit. It has a thick rind that tends to burst about ripening time. There is some tasty pulp around the seeds. My wife calls it the ' buttered popcorn' fruit. At CATIE they have several in production just passed the jaboticabas.  The trees are not that big, could be planted at about 6m spacing.

I ate some at the Fruit and Spice Park. I thought they were very good and they were even slightly under ripe. My friend describes the taste as sweet buttered white bread. I thought they were slightly creamy. Totally worth growing if you have the room for some rare species. They are somewhat cold hardy as well. I would say full sun and treat it as you would other Pouteria such as canistel.

Yes worth growing. To me they taste similar to white sapote. Down side is low pulp to waste ratio as seeds are big and rind is very thick. It's been discussed before on the forum so do a search inside this forum to get more info.

Thanks. The first thing I did was search this board, but nothing came up. Is there another names for the fruit perhaps?

It's listed under cinnamon apple. You somehow didn't do the search correctly. Try again.

I have a few fruits and flowers on my cinnamon apple right now. The fruit are pretty small, but with our winter they came through just fine. I have the tree right next to a few canistel and maybe that helped pollinate them.

Good luck

Really doubt canistel pollen would pollinate cinnamon apple. Anyway pouterias are self pollinating.

Only mention Ive heard of possible Pouteria hybrids is in a Fairchild report and that was between sapota, viridis and fossicola. These overlap in nature and are closely related. Im not sure how far apart these two are genetically, so whether its possible im not sure. Would be an interesting cross though.

This is one of the fruits I look forward to at the F&S Park. It doesn't have the best texture or pulp-to-seed ratio, but the flavor to me is excellent. They can be eaten at different stages of ripeness, from slightly underripe to past ripe!

I am looking for a cinnamon apple plant for sale in South Florida, so if anyone knows where please let me know.

I had intended on getting one from Mike at Treesnmore, but never quite made it his way, and the distance is a bt much from me.

Apparently this is a synonym of pouteria glomerata.

Full sun, plenty of Calcium.  Native in limestone areas, but has also produced on sandy soil.
