Eugenia zeyheri (edit: capensis)
« on: February 29, 2016, 03:27:57 PM »
So little information available on Eugenia zeyheri. Who is growing it? Shrub is only 1m tall and has edible black berries. Called 'Eastern Cape Myrtle' and meant to be from South America, but it's not on Helton's website and the name sounds like it could be from South Africa's eastern cape.

Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

Commonly grown as a slow growing hedge plant in some parts of Oz but I didn't know fruits were edible. Other down under members might have been growing them for food? Kinda like natal plum seems to be more of a hedge plant primarily and not for the edible fruit

Thanks Don and DimplesLee.
I didn't realise E. capensis was the same as E. zeyheri. Actually zeyheri is one of the many subspecies of capensis.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has tasted it. I'm thinking it might need help from its northern neighbour the miracle fruit...

Edit: Have some good red soil that I think capensis would like, South Africa has a similar soil structure to the Australia's outback from some photos I've seen.
