Pigmented Mexican limes
« on: September 16, 2017, 10:22:27 AM »
Anthocyanin containing  pigmented Mexican limes were produced in Florida by transgenic insertion of genes from red grape (Vitis):

 and Moro orange:

Thanks Ilya for the pictures.  If one looks on the Internet concerning transgenic transfer with the Mexican Lime (Key lime) as the receiving agent, there is a lot of information on various transferred genes, such as the CTV gene to control of CTV virus in the lime..   Gene splicing has unlimited capabilities.

It is because Key lime has a very short juvenile period, an easy target.

Yes, Key lime's juvenile period from seed to fruit is 2-3 years.  If it is a gene that determines the juvenile period of a tree, I wonder if it could be spliced into other citrus varieties that have long juvenile times frames to greatly reduce the waiting time from seed to maturity.

Oh I would love to know how to create something like pigmented keylime.
What is splicing and how is this done?

If you want I can send you the full text article (need your email address by PM).
The scientific term of splicing is for something else, but the isolation of genes  from one plant and their insertion into the genome of other plants technically is quite straightforward.
The main obstacle is in  regulations, these operations by law should be done is special containment facilities and the final plants require special authorizations.

This reminds me... remember the article a ways back I posted about research in Spain where a citrus virus was hijacked to force maturity onto seedlings so they start flowering immediately?   I emailed the researchers but sadly never got a response.   I don't speak Spanish so its hard for me to pursue further.  I'll have to keep checking in on their work.

No way, they risk a prison if they send you the stuff.

I was simply asking them about their plans to make it available elsewhere in the future.  Certainly not "send me some of your virus please" :)
