What is your favorite tropical cherry?
« on: January 04, 2018, 04:56:07 PM »
I have three locations for cherry trees. I have a lolita surinam that I love.

Some that I have considered include cherry of the rio grande, barbados, pitomba, and grumichama.

Can anyone comment on the taste and production, and where you are growing them? I'm in San Diego (10a)

Barbados cherry tastes much better than the Surinam cherries I have tasted. My small tree (3-4 feet) produced a few dozen berries a few months ago, and is flowering again. Have been told that the taste improves with age of the tree.

Grumichima. Sweeter but smaller and a short crop season. Barbados Cherry can really produce. Better pulp to seed ratio but not as sweet as Grumichima. Get em both.

Barbados cherries fruit plentifully, reliably, and is precocious. No experience with other cherries, but most Eugenia fruit need shade to do well.

Grumichama for taste. Full sun here. Grumis I've had are bigger than Barbados tho. They just don't produce as much and short season as mentioned above

Be careful where you purchase your Barbados cherry.  Mine fruited first time this year and were so sour, birds didn't eat them.
For a true cherry, there are some improved versions of capulun cherry that supposedly taste good if you can find them.
As for my favorite, I cannot recommend enough Jamaican cherry.  Strong grower, a biut thirsty, fruit are beyond delicious!

I have governor plum but it's not nice...don't know why, has much fruit, even birds don't steal it.

Having all three main ones including a "Zell's" Black star Surinam, Rio Grande, and Barbados, by far Barbados is the best tasting of them. I love finding a ripe berry on the tree.

Where's a good place to get Barbados cherry / what is a good cultivar?

Grumixama, Barbados and Surinam Cherry. My barbados and surinam cherry came from Brazil and I usually get huge fruits. I have an extra Grumixama and Barbados Cherry for sale for those in San Diego area.

U hear fruit from Barbados cherry vary greatly.  Maybe best source is to get a graft from someone who says they are great.

The Eugenia are addicting and very easy to collect them all, I finally got a dozen
E. candolleana to sample this year and I sure wish I had 4-5 of them fruiting.
I also really enjoy the pitangatuba, E selloi, I have 10 plants and they have been
fruiting constantly for a couple years, It is very unusual and not for everyone.
I had a COR that finally fruited 40-50 last year and that is the closest I have had
to a Northern cherry, the only difference was the pulp was less per fruit.
I really enjoyed the yellow and black grumichama but like everyone said they
fruit in a small time frame. Another real nice thing is most Eugenia will fruit in a
pot and can be kept on the smaller side, There is so much variation in the fruit
within each type. Good Luck

I realize it's not a "Cherry" but jaboticaba is probably one of the best fruits that would be comparable with a cherry. I prefer them to barbados, surinam etc. They are sweeter, and do not have the resinous flavors that accompany eugenias.   The one exception I might make is pitangatuba. It's an awesome fruit.

Full disclosure I keep surinam, barbados, jamaica, etc, but I think jaboticaba is head and shoulders above them all. Good luck!

Mine improved a lot with age. I love my Barbados. It never complains and is low maintenance. All it does is grow like crazy and produce prolific amounts of cherries. I have dozens of fruit trees but my barbados is on of my favorites. It gets me very close to my goal of fresh fruit 365 days a year.

Fruitscapes has a good one they propagate and sell. Possibly water/fert/full sun helps grumi fruit size? Or maybe I've just had bad Barbados!
