A friend of mine has this tree, which produced fruits which taste like unripe Spondias mombin, is powdery inside, with one seed. The leaf is sour. Can somebody identify?

It is what is known as 'karaka' in Malayalam, Eleacarpus serratus. It is powdery and slightly sour sweet.
