What are some lesser-known varieties of stonefruit worth having?
« on: February 22, 2018, 03:02:00 AM »
I am completely new to stone fruits and would like to know: what are some new/rare varieties?

For example, is there a variety of peach that wins all the taste competitions?

Check out this site, try searching for under 400 hrs of chill.  There are lots of taste test winners.  The idea is to get several types that ripen at different times.

Dave Wilson Nursery has some low chill cherries (Zaiger's varieties). but results aren't that good. Cristobalina has a pretty goood reputation and only needs 200 chill hours. www.arboreumco.com carries them but is already sold out for this year. Craig's Crimson is 500-600 hours, probably the next lowest (besides the Zaiger varieties). Some of Dave Wilson's nectarines have pretty low chill requirements.

I see Lapins cherry only requires 400 hours, it's a good one.

Go here to check your chill hours -

I love my Spicezee tree from Dave Wilson. Taste great, prolific, no pest the last 3 years that I planted, low chill, easy care...
Here is more about it:
