White Jade Pineapple
« on: February 21, 2014, 12:13:01 PM »
I got my White Jade Pineapple plants from Flying Fox Fruits, Adams new nursery, yesterday and the plants came in perfect condition. The little plants look super healthy and none of them snapped during shipping. The roots are just starting to come out of their plug and I potted them into some organic potting soil.

Adam, if you are reading this, do you have any advice on how to acclimate these to the outdoors? I know you mentioned that these were tissue cultured so I'm wondering if they were grown under artificial light or in a greenhouse. It gets down to about 50F at night and about 80F in the daytime currently here in San Diego. Thanks again for the plants and the excellent service! I'll definitely be ordering more plants from Flying Fox Fruits!
Simon

I have mine outside in a part shade area. About 4 hours of direct sun.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I put one of mine in full sun, two in part sun and two in full shade but bright ambient light just to be safe. Anyone know what's the lowest temp this variety of pineapple can withstand? Thanks!

All my pineapples, including White Jade, experienced a 38o morning this winter without any problems.

Simon,

thanks for posting about your purchase!

The pineapples came from a greenhouse that had about 25% shade, and had natural lighting.

I've been keeping them somewhat shaded at about 20 % shade until they get about 10 inches tall, just to be safe..although they might be able to handle full sun this time of year...I wasn't willing to risk it yet!

I hope yours grow nicely!

one of my largest plants (from the original pups that I got) is starting to flower now.  Hopefully I can taste one of these before the end of the year!

That's awesome Adam, please post an update if you get any fruit this year. I'll report back in a couple days to let people know how my plant in full sun does. It was quite hot today here in San Diego with bright sun and low humidity. Cheers,
Simon

A couple days after I received my pineapple plants, the one I had in full sun was doing fine so I put all of them in full sun and they seem to be happy. These plants are awesome and are also very decorative, I can't wait until they fruit!

thanks for the info Simon!

yes I think they can handle full sun..mine are in full sun too.

I notice some have red coloration on the leaves, and some do not.

Even the mother plants I have, one is reddish, one is not.

I have a fruit set on the mother plant...so I will be sure to keep the forum posted as it progresses.

Adam, how far apart should I plant these pineapple plants?  Do they need a lot of fertilizer?  More or less than a papaya plant?

According to UF, 18-36 inches apart (36 for larger plants, fruit).

Is this a really good variety?  What's special about it as I'm thinking about ordering some plantlets.

I have read that commercial groves tend to space pineapples in rows with the plants being spaced 12" apart and the rows 3' apart from each other.

Supposedly the closer spacing provides support to the plants as they have shallow root systems and tend to lean over or get "loose" and not stand firmly upright.

Mark in texas, its suppose to be a sweet tender white variety that you can eat the tender sweet white core too; so no waste, Adam's plants are busy suntanning nicely at my house in full sun; hope to get my first fruit in 18 months or so without induce artificial flowering.

If it's the same variety as the fruit that Frankie sells then I can say it's a very nice variety. I don't remember the core but it could just be so soft that I didn't notice it. It's not big but it's very sweet due having to low acid.

phantomcrab, your 11 month old White Jade grown in full sun from a USDA tissue culture. Smooth leaves.
How wide is the plant, I like mine spaced where the tip of the leaves just miss the base of the next plant core/body/base(?).

The plant has a wingspan of 22 inches and currently is in a 6 inch pot. Shortly it will be moved up to a 3 gallon. Pineapples have small root systems so that is all one plant needs. I've also grown 3 plant clusters in 10 gallon pots and that worked well too. They were a little difficult to move around without getting speared though.
I space the potted plants as close as possible so the leaves can overlap and they support each other. A large plant can get top heavy.

nice plant phantomcrab!

what really attracted me to this cultivar, is the fact that is like sugar loaf, but thornless.

I hate thorns so much, that's all you have to say.

I got the plants from my friend (very knowledgeable and trustworthy), he said he tasted this variety, and it was the sweetest pineapple ever...with low acid and edible core....also said the fruit was super soft and juicy (I guess that's why it never made it commercially).

Monte Lirio and Cultivade Parana Pichuna are also smooth leaved like White Jade. Unfortunately I do not have any taste test results for them. Cheese Pine is supposed to be very good tasting but thorny.

i guess my trees didn't like the full sun....some got a bit of leaf burn...but I put them in some shade, and I think they'll be fine.
