Clay,, thanks for the Durlings video.  It was quite interesting. I've seen many grafting videos, but never seen the tactic of binding over the scion and then placing a rubber band around it  to hold it down for the one year time frame.  - Millet

We've been doing it in Texas for decades.  Bending over the rootstock (tieing it to the side of the pot) redirects the growth hormones from the terminal tip to the scion.    IOW, you're playing with a plant's apical dominance thingie.

You don't need to tie for a year, just until the scion pushes.
