I would put it in a plastic clam shell (such as strawberries come in) so no critter can molest it and let it ripen more. Don't get too excited. This first fruit may not be representative of the Carrie mango.  :(   But hopefully it will be. I give it 50% chance either way.

I am thinking the riper you let it get the closer this fruit will come to being representative.  70 80 90 100% representative. It is a good size so I think you might luck out.

Isn't this the first mango from any of your trees?

Zands,

This little 4 and half footer blossomed 2 times and put out at least over 50 Mango pebbles which of course dropped all but 3....Though that is quite incredible for a tree that traveled cross country in mild shock showing very good adaptation to this Socal Climate... It put out its first flush last week and believe it or not...this tree is about to send up more panicles again!!!! 3 seasons on a Mango tree...what in the hell.....I'm sure its a fluke with this weird weather we have gotten in the last year.

Ok, I'll give it just a little bit longer....The anticipation is building!!!!!!!! I know this fruit will most likely not live up to a full mature Carrie tree's fruit...but anything beats this crap we're getting from Mexico and Central America.....though I have stumbled upon a few yellow (Atauflos) Mangos out here that were ok

The Carries I've eaten were all fallen from the tree at the F&S Park, very yellow, slightly soft and very good. Carrie should be eaten quickly once ripe. They don't keep long. I would wait for more yellow coloration. Look at the PIN picture.

how much yellow? I've seen several post where it says Carrie could have literally a 1 day window of ripened perfection....one person said it could be a matter of hours.

how much yellow?
The ones I ate looked like this. A young tree may not be able to carry fruit to this point of ripeness.

DO NOT rely on yellow color while picking Carrie. Some on my tree will stay 100% green while fully ripe inside. If you are not sure, bend it  90 degrees up and if ready, it will come off on its own. When ripe, the top of the mango around the stem will fill out and form into a "butt-shape" :) Once it is no longer thin near the stem and fills out it should ripen properly. And when picked, I prefer to eat them when it begins to soften slightly to the touch and begin to smell.

Hey Clay,

Any update on your Carrie? I'm eager to hear a taste report since I've never tasted a Carrie before.

Simon,

I am so eager to pluck this baby off, but I would like to give it a few more days before I pick it...also I'm assuming it may need to ripen a tad bit off the tree as well? apparently it needs to have a little slight give when pressed in like most Mangos? I'm such a noob....I hope I don't botch this Carrie sampling.

No matter what color you see Do not pick it rock hard. It must have a little give.

I have no idea what zands is talking about,  you do not have to wait till it has any give before picking.

Bsbullie doesn't eat Carries if he can help it
I have a 6 year old tree and rate them top tier. On a younger tree those failed first mangoes are too young. Will not get fully ripe no matter what you do or how long you wait. The young tree just can't provide that last extra something
So to give them (young trees mangoes) the best shot you err on picking over ripe rather than under ripe as in rock hard
On a mature tree you can pick rock hard mangoes that will ripen properly in your house

On my own Carrie tree I will not pick one unless soft or a little soft to the touch. Many end up dropping before I "harvest" them. Yes they can be picked rock hard on these older Carrie trees and I know people who do so. The claim is they taste better. But its not my preference.

Summary-- On any younger mango tree fruiting the first year I will not pick the mango unless it is at least a little soft. Has some give. Bit softer more better.....

I have probably picked, seen and sold more Carrie than zands ever will.  I have no idea what this crap is about they should be soft and depend on the age of the tree.  Follow if you want but it has no merit.

Clay promise me you will clip all baby mangoes off your small trees next year ......

Don't fall victim to  impatience.  Feed , foliar spray , water , mulch, shade and water the babies  ......

Give them a chance to grow for you at least 2 years  (Especially if they are 3 or 7 gallons ) . I'm sure some members from FL would be happy to ship some to you for the next 2 Summers or so to satisfy your mango fix  or do like me pay a visit to the Fruit and spice park mid summer   ;)

Mango Maniac I know....I just couldn't help it....I will gladly pay premium price and shipping for future Fl Mangos if possible...

However...All trees that have fruited have also put on incredible growth non the less...even in Socal where many say our trees grow much slower. I'll post pics of my Nam Doc Mai holding Fruits which has jumped from a 7 g tree to 15 g over night

Please forgive me Gary....

I feel so bad, look out how much nutrients the fruit sucked form the branch its growing on....all the leaves look like a Mango Vampire sucked it dry on that Branch.

Yes, they do that sometimes....now, did you say the Carrie was flushing
new leaves while holding fruit?  If so, that kind of vigor works well for
desperate mango lovers like yourself, because you can get growth during
fruit ripening season.  If it had no growth and you had to wait till the fruit
had all been picked (like my Keitt, Kent, Glenn and others) it can be a disaster
to let fruit stay on young trees as you are lucky to maybe get one flush in
before the cold sets in....

so...maybe you'll be OK, sailor man!
