Temperate Fruit Discussion / Red Fleshed Nectarines

I was wondering if anyone knew of any varieties that exist that you can actually get and grow in  the US?
I know of the Red Raspberry you can sometimes get from Raintree.


There is a commercial variety from France that sounds amazing called the Nectavigne


But other than these two varieties I can't find much else. 
Also I do know that some of the Zaiger Artic series have some red streaks but thats not quite the same.

Is this just a quality that people don't care about so no one breeds for it?

I wanna get 1 or 2 varieties or Opuntia going so I am looking for pads of larger fruited and tasty selections of those.

Also looking to get some different Red/Pink Fleshed Guava scions. I already have barbie pink so no need for that or ruby supreme.

And finally looking for improved Loquat Scions. preferably Novak, Avri or Peluche.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Zaiger/Stone Fruit Pollenation Concerns and Questions

So I have the itch to plant me some high quality Zaiger interspecific hybrids.
My problem is I only have room for two trees and the want for potentially non compatible varieties.

Specifically I would like a Spicezee Nectaplum and a Pluerry or Peacotum (which doesn't seem to be available this year)

The issue seems to arise from the Pluerry , Peacotum and most pluots need to be pollenized by another plum/pluot or Pluerry.

Does anyone know if the Spicezee would be OK as a pollenator?  Or have any suggestions about solving this game of musical pollenators?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Choice for White Sapote Cultivar

I am looking at ordering a White Sapote from PIN and they have 4 varieties available:
Homestead, Redland, Smathers, and Younghan.

I was wondering what the major differences between these would be?
Reading through threads on here I saw some opinions that redlands can be pretty hit or miss depending on the seedling rootstock but otherwise not many specifics.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Cold Hardry Grapefuit/Pommelos

So I tried a Melogold grapefruit for the first time this week and my mind was blown.  I have always been averse to grapefuit due to the outright bitterness but this hybrid has changed my mind. Now I am intent on having a grapefruit and or Pommelo tree in my back yard. I have been trying to find out if any of these varieties are cold hardy in zone 8b. I have not been able to find much concrete evidence but am hoping that some of you have had first hand experience.  The varieties I am looking at are as follows:

Melogold
Oroblanco
Cocktail Grapefruit (Or mandelo as some may call it)
Hirado Butan

I would really like to have at least one red flesh variety so if Hirado Butan is not hardy enough please recommend one that would be.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strange Pomegranate Growth

So a few weeks ago I grabbed an Angel Red pomegranate at a local nursery.

I have notice that one shoot of growth looks entirely different from the rest of the plant. It is taller , straighter, the leaves are larger and the bark looks slighty green instead  of just brown.  It also is coming straight from the roots and not the main stem.
 My question is do nurserys graft pomegranates on to sturdier variety rootstocks and is this a rootstock shoot?

If it is a rootstock shoot can i leave it alone and have two varities  on one bush ?  Or could it take over ?  Thirdly if it is rootstock what variety could it be?  It was a monrovia nursery plant if that helps.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kellys Choice Opuntia?

So I want to get a few Opuntia's for my front yard in a nice sunny spot for decorative and fruiting purposes.  My local nursery has a few varieties but when asking their "succulent guy" about them he was pretty useless about which one would produce the largests/tastiest fruit.

The one variety I am extremely insterested in they have is Kelly's Choice.  It seems to produce lots of gorgeous pink flowers.  But I cannot find much information anywhere about its fruiting habits and I don't want to drop $80 on two plants to find out next year they produce really tiny fruit.

They also had some Santa Rita's which looked quite nifty with their purple tint but my understanding is their fruit is tiny.

The "succulent guy" recommended I get either the wavy spineless or plain spineless for fruit but couldn't really tell me anything on them besides that they produce fruit. 

Before asking they did not have Robusta of Ficus Indica there otherwise I would have grabbed some of those.

Wavy Spineless
Spineless
Santa Rita
Kellys Choice
And an Unanmed Native Spiny specimen.

Would love to know if any of these are worth growing for their fruit or if I would be better off with
something else entirely.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID'ing a Cactus Tree

Saw a unique looking cactus this morning on the way to work sitting at a stoplight. It was covered in small pink/red flowers and what appeared to be small red fruit as well. Unfortunately I could not grab a picture quick enough.   However luckily there are some decent Google Street views of the plant. Google image search turned up tree like cactus with lobes and paddles. This appears to have more rounded branches.  Any info trying to figure out what this is would be great.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava Trees for Central Texas

I know that here in Austin the Pineapple Guava thrives and I plan on purchasing one or two.

However I want at least one other type preferably with Red/Pink Flesh. I have been looking at the Ruby Supreme but have found conflicting reports as to its cold hardiness in the ground.

I know all of these could be container grown but I plan on getting some citrus as well and want to limit the number of pots I have to bring in during the occasional cold snaps.

Any info is greatly appreciated.
