Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need some help with mango ID
« on: July 09, 2023, 08:21:53 PM »
Friend brought a a few mangos from a person with a tree in Vero beach of a mango with a taste profile completely unique to anything I’ve every tried… it doesn’t fit the mold of classic florida, Indian, or se Asian, the mango is tiny, flesh is whiter that ivory and the flavor is sweet honey (really though not like that one knock off called raw honey🙈), zero fibers, and creamy. Mango looks like it’s very susceptible to anthractnose. Here are some pics.

Thanks,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting wax jambu help
« on: November 24, 2022, 07:59:11 AM »
I have a rare seedling wax jambu that I want to clone as I’m somewhat worried it could die unexpectedly, and I want to hedge that risk. It’s about two feet tall and growing as a single leader not branching. I’m thinking I could tip prune it to induce branching and then graft the cutting. So then the question:

Does anyone have experience grafting wax jambu and what methods did you employ?

Thanks,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Salak first flowers, palm city FL
« on: November 10, 2022, 10:06:41 AM »
Went out today to assess yard post storm Nicole, noticed one of my salaks is flowering. Seems of all the things this took a beating as the long fronds catch the wind while shallow weak roots… if planting out where high winds are a concern place in protected area 👍

Wondering if these are male or female flowers or still too soon to tell?

Here’s a great link on different types: https://www.thesnakefruit.com/blog/snake-fruit/what-is-salak-bali/

Originally bought these seeds from Han sun as “honey salak” and have a few growing out in my yard now, hoping to try this fruit someday and todays news reignites the hope!

Really curious to try this, as I enjoy dried figs and dates in my morning oatmeal and on their own which I hear it’s similar?

If anyone is selling please reach out.

Currently I use a silver sharpie marker to write/identity what is planted in my black plant pots. It has worked well in the past, though recently I’m having an issue where I’ll buy multiple packs of silver sharpie markers and they seem to be defective/dried out/the flow of ink isn’t constant.

So looking to see if anyone can recommend a better permanent marker brand? My favorite means of identifying the plants is permanent silver/white lettering on the black pots. I’m open to new ideas also.

Thanks,
-Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID this plant, a tropical edible tuber?
« on: September 25, 2022, 05:45:13 PM »
Hey Forum,

I was visiting a friend recently and remarked on the leaves of a plant I’d never seen before and he gave me an off shoot of what he described as “I don’t know what the hell it’s called but it produces a giant edible potatoe and here grow one too.”

Can anyone ID this?

Thanks,
Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya in FL anecdote
« on: September 24, 2022, 07:52:26 AM »
Earlier this year I pollinated my el bumpo with Lisa atemoya pollen and got two flowers to set. Last week the fruit fell off prematurely. Pictured is two small el bumpos left and center next to a small geffner. Both el bumpos softened up and the larger one was edible and nice tasting, no grit with a almost bubble gum flavor. The seeds look viable and I’m excited to plant these out and see what comes of these hybrid cherimoya x atemoya seeds.

Hey Forum,

Wanted to put this out there and see what others may be experiencing, but for two seasons now I’ve been trying to cross ‘painter’ fka ‘cherilata’ with other annonas in my collection and I’ve come up completely empty handed when it’s used as pollen parent. I’ve tried painter x sugar apple, painter x geffner, painter x el bumpo, painter x dream and nothing sticks when used as pollen. I’ve found painter is receptive to sugar apple pollen and I’ve gotten a few fruits to set as female parent. Has any one else tried these crosses and achieved fruit set as pollen parent?

This is an observation, but it sent me down a rabbit hole and I came across this article : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6378316/#!po=0.925926

Evidently, sometimes Annona hybrids can be naturally occurring Triploid or Tetraploid variants which can have an effect on their ability to reproduce. In this paper it is mentioned that:

So I’m curious if it’s possible that ‘Painter’ may be a triploid hybrid which would explain why none of the pollen is working 🤷‍♂️ I guess to confirm this would require a flow cytometer to karyotype a leaf sample 🤔.

Hey Forum,

I’m looking for seeds or bud wood of annona acutiflora. I know this is a rare one but willing to trade for other rare annonas or purchase seeds or budwood. Sulcata grove had one at one point but theirs unfortunately died recently. I did purchase seeds from them of this previously but mine did not germinate and it was before I got better at germinating annonas.

Any leads on this is appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ice Cream Mango acting weird
« on: February 20, 2022, 05:36:14 PM »

About half the fruit forming on the tree has blush on it, I’ve never seen ice cream mangos with blush could this be some metaxenic effect maybe?

Then here’s a panicle that grew leaves at the end and is flushing again off the tip of the panicle 🤷‍♂️😂
