Marlys mango
« on: August 16, 2015, 12:18:45 AM »
Has anyone tried this fairly new Zill's release - Marlys mango?
I was curious on its taste/flavor and texture.
Thanks!
Warren

I've tried them a couple times and been disappointed.
I don't remember specifics, though, and I might have gotten some that were not optimal.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

'Marlys' resembles 'Bailey's Marvel', but with a little more flavor and better productivity.

Yes, i have had it many times over the years.  In no way does it live up to the other recent ZHPP releases.

You are being too kind.  Many love Baileys Marvel and i have seen the tree produce large crops in eastern parts of the County, most comments i have heard from consumers were not thrilled with it.  I believe its from Zill 80, and while i am not a fan of Baileys Marvel, i would personally not compare.the two and i am in no way a fan or one who would recommend the Marlys.

Come on, Rob.  Stop beating around the bush and tell us what you really think of the Marlys mango.

I would much rather have a 'Fruit Punch' tree.

Thanks all for your opinions.
Well, I guess the Florida consensus is that Marlys is not that great.

By forum searches, I see that Venus (also a fairly new release to Californians) fared much better than Marlys.

Rob...your such a teaser!  Can't wait to see Cotton Candy and Fenix /Phoenix mango available to the CA market someday....soon???

Please dont let my comments or opinions dictate them for everyone.   I am sure some like the Marlys and there is nothing wrong with it but my comments are based on eating it over a number of years and hearing comments from consumers especially when compared to the already released varieties and a number of experimental /unreleased varieties that were available to the public this year.

Rob,  a friend of mine absolutely loved Phoenix and would also like to plant a mango tree in his yard some day.

So I hope you will update us on its overall characteristics as you learn more over time.
If Phoenix turns out to be good enough to sell to us masses, I'll buy my friend a tree.

Had 2 Marlys mangos this week. Found them to be very good-excellent. Like an improved Bailey's Marvel (which I've never much cared for; the one tree that I had them from, they had a slight Aspartame aftertaste to them).  Bought them at Excaliburs
They're like the Varmint-Cong...

I had one and concur with Rob.  I had a guest who was told I had sourced amazing mangoes and someone (my wife) gave them Marlys before I knew it (or had it).  I heard them say "it tastes like a regular mango" (thought bubble: "you guys travelled to Florida for this??").  Well, at least with other mangoes their experience only improved.  It is better than Tommy.
