With all the controversy with faux pajapita GR has been in the shadow but it actually set more fruits on a much smaller growing tree.

Yes Thera. These will be identical to Harry's Genova Red here are pix. Hopefully we'll get more planted out here in Socal these grow easily and take our climate well.

That Genova Red is a beautiful fruit. I definitely want my name on the list for a grafted tree. Do you ever have trouble with the fruits cracking ? I've read where that's a problem with Ilama. What has your experience been ?

Ii is not a problem or a deficiency when  ilama crack/split.  It is normal.  That is how they let you know they are at the right time for harvest.

In Florida they crack, but when I was in El Salvador, I did not see any cracking. Maybe the locals were just anxious.  Ahhhh man, those were good memories, a couple Ilamas a day, countless fresh cocnuts, grilled corn on the cob, and surfing Punta Roca/ El Zonte/ Sunzal.

That's interesting. I've been told not to harvest until it cracks. My Genova red cracked but my anona rosada are still on the tree I will harvest one to try.

Beautiful fruit JF, you've got quite the collection going. Makes me want to graft more varieties onto my established trees. Thanks for sharing.

JF,

It was the first time I had seen ilama harvested, and the locals said it was the end of season, so maybe they just wanted to finish up.  I trust you and Rob, makes perfect sense, I do the same with my sugar apples.  BTW, your fruit and trees look good! Sometimes jealous of your Med climate.

Thanks for the Annona info the other day too.

I would not let sugar apples split/crack.  With their texture much softer, if the split on the tree the stem can easily loosen itself from the fruit causing the fruit to hit the ground and become food for the bugs.  I just look for the sections to expand to know when to harvest.   On the other hand, the ilama is much firmer in texture and the cracling is not usually at the stem which tends not to loosten the stem core from the fruit.  Of course, if you let an ilama hang on the tree long enough,  it will eventually fall to the ground.
