Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar Crisp Loquat Origin?

Lack of firmness is generally an indication of lack of ca. Compost can make ca deficiency worse, which is what I assume may have happened in your case. Try laying down gypsum. You can get it at Helena Chemical for about $12 / 50 pounds. I've been adding 100 - 150 pounds a year to each carambola tree.

100-150 pounds per tree??

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: can pluots pollinate other pluots?
« on: December 16, 2018, 04:20:54 PM »
To answer original poster, no, pluots cannot pollinate other pluots, as pollination is something done by insects and wind.
If you meant cross-pollination, then yes, pluots can do this to each other, and with four I don't think there will be an issue of incompatible pollen.

@Samu
Spicezee is not a pluot, it is a nectaplum (hybrid) which has 87% peach/nectarine in its pedigree and only 13% plum.

yeah i wasnt expecting the branches to pollinate each other.  Most varieties of pluots recommend Santa Rose Plum, which mine died.  Question was do i need pollen from a santa rose plum or will pollen from one pluot to another be ok?

i got four pluots, according to DWN, they should all use a Santa Rosa Plum for pollination.  Well my SRP just kicked the bucket, so i was going to replace with a beauty plum and hope the pluots would cross pollinate with each other.  Thoughts??

Thanks everyone,

Mark, I honestly have no idea how close the seedlings of Leo Hybrid #3 will come true to the parent Fruit. If you need actual scions, Brad and I should have more next year.

I just sampled a Koochie Island Annona, I believe it’s an Atemoya but not sure. The Fruit was over a pound and only had 6 seeds. This fruit was actually quite good but just lacked a bit of acidity although it did have some.

I want to find an Annona that will add the following characteristics to my cultivar I’m trying to create:
Self Fruitful
Fewer seeds
Good flavor/acidity that Atemoyas tend to lack
Size averaging minimum of 1 pound

Leos Hybrid #3 has not been tested long enough but it’s the best thing I can find right now. The flavor is absolutely amazing but some fruit have very low seed counts and some fruit have higher seed counts. I also don’t know if it’s self fruitful at all locations. I hand pollinated my flowers for my experiments. I’ll tag a few flowers and not hand pollinate the flower to see if it sets fruit and also to see the seed count for unpollinated Fruit.

I would also like to use Australian varieties like Hilary White but I have never tasted the fruit before. I know HW can probably add size and fewer seeds but I don’t want to take away from the flavor.

If anyone has the link to the thread that talked about  passing traits onto progeny based on wether the selected trait was from the pollen or the female, I’d appreciate it.

Simon

can you tell me more about the Koochie island, i have one i planted last year, thinking of replacing it with either a pierce or fino de jete

i did do a search, and most around from 2012-2016 and only briefly mention Priestly.  If anyone is currently growing, would you please post pics of the fruit and tree if possible.

i purchased a CC 3g about a year ago, earlier this year i transplanted in a 15g container.  Looks like its a semi vigorous upright grower.  Any else have see the same thing??  So far it looks really good and healthy!
