Dragon Fruit Cuttings
« on: August 27, 2014, 12:46:31 AM »
Anyone know a good place to buy dragon fruit cuttings?

I'm trying to buy purple haze, Halley comet, pepino dulce, and rixford hylocereus.

Did you get fruit from the Quang Ong White? I think I made up that name to remind myself where it's from. I got it from Jose Gallegos from San Diego who told me he got it from Quang Ong (Ong's Nursery) and it's a good sweet white variety. I never got fruit from it though so I'm wondering what it's like.

I have a limited # of surplus cuttings.

Delight, Physical Graffiti, Valdivia Roja, & Vietnamese White.

I also have plenty of un-named red flesh Hylocereus polyrhizus which closely resembles my Armando.

Is Purple Haze any good....or did they just dub it really catchy weed Phrase to hype it up....

I just purchased Cebra, Condor, Delight, and Orejona from Mattlandscapes in Fallbrook...really nice guy with over 70 Dragon Fruit Varieties to choose from...He's out of stock of Mexicana...hoping to still find that one.
Thinking about joining a Fruitaholics anonymous support group...Fruit addiction has taken over my life!

I have not been to MattsLandscaping, but he has one of the most complete collections of Dragon Fruit varieties.

Purple Haze is Paul Thomson 5-S and is closely related to:
Physical Graffiti (Paul Thomson 1-S)
Cosmic Charlie (Paul Thomson 2-S)
Delight (Paul Thomson 3-S)

Buying 5 gal. potted plants will give you a 1 year jump start and you may get fruit your second year.

Sugar dragon and Arizona purple has similar fruit. Small, thin skin, red inside.
Giant Viet is the one one you probably have. Not very sweet, large, white inside.
American beauty, condor, G2 are similar. They can grow to be a medium large size, magenta inside.
Delight, physical graffiti are similar. Require cross pollination, medium-large size, pink inside.
Others I'm not familiar with.

which ones taste the best (i know taste is subjective)?  I have had several bland types recently.  Not looking for brix scores, just which ones are the most flavorful

Personally I like the G2 ones and the sugar dragon ones. I used to like halley's comet which is similar to physical graffiti. Those haven't been fruiting much lately so I forgot how they taste. My containers broke down and only held 6" of soil and the plants didn't like that. It's been fixed for next year so I'm expecting much more fruit.
