Title: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: Kevin Jones on August 06, 2020, 12:03:44 PM
Now is the time to start growing a great tree and get it for a great price too!
Thai Dwarf Mulberry.
Why wait years for fruit... when you could be picking fruit in only months!
Fast and easy to grow. It thrives in a pot too.
Can EASILY be grown in a 5 gallon container!
After the first harvest is over... Just cut it back hard...
And wait for the fruit to start setting again on the new growth.
That's what I do!
Multiple trees could be pruned into production... in rotation... to keep fresh fruit available all season.

You ship to canada?!?! How much ?
Title: Re: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: Kevin Jones on January 31, 2021, 01:01:17 PM
This is how we handled it... The guy who ordered it payed UPS for the shipping... emailed me the pre-paid label and I dropped off the box to UPS.
There was also some import documentation involved... gardening supplies...which he also handled and emailed me to include on the box.
Not quite as strait-forward as shipping to the US... but he made it easy for me.
If he is monitoring this channel... maybe he will pop in and give you some additional info.

Hope that helped...

Will these survive in zone 7? I've tried "wild" mulberries in parks the fruit are so small compared to yours!
Title: Re: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: Kevin Jones on February 02, 2021, 07:53:42 PM
I haven't grown them in that zone... but I don't see why they wouldn't.
The ones I have planted in the ground go dormant and drop their leaves every fall.
Come Spring... they pop out with leaves and fruit.
After they fruit... I cut them back hard... and they will fruit again!

Maybe someone in your area can shed more light on their hardiness.
Thanks for your interest!

Glad it's working out so well for you!
And remember... After you harvest those fruits... be sure to prune it back by at least 1/3... hit it with some fertilizer.... and it will fruit again on the new growth.
And it will repeat that fruiting throughout the season until winter.
These trees are pretty amazing!
Thanks for the feedback.

Good Luck!

Kevin

Kevin, you trees look excellent.
How tall or big is your parent tree ?
Title: Re: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: Kevin Jones on February 12, 2021, 10:49:47 PM
Thanks... They are around 5 ft tall... of course they would be taller... but I cut them back hard after every fruiting. 2 are in 5 gallon pots... and one is in a 15 gallon.
Once these ripen and are consumed... I will cut them back by about 2/3s and hit them with fertilizer for another round of fruit on the new growth.
They are very fast growing and compact.

Kevin

Title: Re: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: sc4001992 on February 12, 2021, 10:57:51 PM
Yup, I agree. They do fruit a lot. I hope to taste the fruits this season on my grafts. Since I have my trees outside, I just let them grow and see how tall they will grow before I cut them way back later in summer. My Black Pakistan tree that I let 3 tall branches grow without topping got to about 18 ft in 2 years before I cut it back to 10 ft.

I heard from some members that the World's Best is the same variety as Thai Dwarf but I'm not sure if that's true. My grafted World's Best is a very slow growing graft.

Received my 2 thai dwarfs. Excellently packed, and healthy plants. Kevin thank you. What fertilizer do u hit them with when u prune them for next fruiting?
Title: Re: THAI DWARF MULBERRY PLANTS
Post by: Kevin Jones on February 27, 2021, 11:21:45 AM
Miracle Grow at regular strength.
If I were you... I would either repot them into a 5 gallon pot... or plant in the ground in a nice sunny place.
A weekly dose of fertilizer wouldn't hurt... they will grow rapidly!
They fruit on new growth... so after they finish a fruiting cycle... you can prune them to fruit again.
In your area... with proper care...  you could easily get 3-4 fruit cycles in a season.
And with multiple trees... you could rotate them so there is always fruit available.

Thanks again for your support!

For anyone with questions as to the hardiness of this tree, it was starting to fully leaf out and then we had a low of 20.  I banked soil around the base of it.  The area that was covered in dirt still has green leaves but the leaves above were toast.  It does not appear that the limbs aboved the banked soil line are dead as pf yet but will not know for sure for another couple of weeks.

Being the optimist that I am... I am hopeful they will sprout out and grow fine for you.
I have a hedge of them planted outside to test their hardiness here and they appear to be OK... dormant still... but OK. We went down to 13 degrees F on our coldest night too.
I'm in central AL... a little cooler than you.
Keep me updated.
Thanks.

I heard from some members that the World's Best is the same variety as Thai Dwarf but I'm not sure if that's true. My grafted World's Best is a very slow growing graft.

I would guess they are the same.  They sure look like it.

World's Best is definitely not a slow grower.  It's all I can do to keep it in check, at least when grown in the ground.  The neglected ones in pots are a different story.

I don't have a "World's Best"... but from the photos I've seen the leaves and fruit look very similar.
More than likely... pure speculation..."World's Best" is a marketing name for the same plant.

Try the new version... "Galaxy's Best"

" I don't have a "World's Best"... but from the photos I've seen the leaves and fruit look very similar.

Kevin, I have a few very small grafts of the World's Best and the large Thai Dwarf on the same tree (in ground). Now I received many more cuttings of World's Best that I grafted. So I should have a good comparision of these by the end of this year. I do agree when I look at the branches and fruits they look very similar. But I do notice the Thai Dwarf is almost turning red now while the World's Best fruit is still small and green. I guess these will be ripe in late April for me to taste.

Sure, no problem. Only growing the two for comparison, may keep the better tasting of the two.

But now, the weight of the fruits bent the branches so I can reach the fruits without a ladder, date: 3-28-21

Got 2 ripe fruits on my Thai Dwarf today, tastes good. Crunchy texture, reminds me of the blueberry crunch when you eat a just ripe one. Taste is good, not very sweet but some good flavor.

Had a guy here on the forum today interested in buying a large number of these wholesale from me.
I'm not really set-up for the wholesale business... so here was my advice to him...

"Honestly... your best bet would be either to source them locally at the size and price you need...
Or to buy a few plants from me and start propagating them yourself.

That's what I did!

These are amazing plants!
They set delicious fruit every time you cut them back.
They grow incredibly fast... and root easier than anything I have ever grown.... easily 90% plus strike root... a very high success rate!
They will grow from 1 ft to 6 ft in just a few months... you take cuttings and root them.... regrow your mother trees... and take cuttings again.
Sell most of them... Keep a few for yourself to add to your stock.
Repeat - Repeat - Repeat!
In your climate... you could easily do this 3- 4 times a year during the active growing season.

So there you are.. I've set you up in the Mulberry Nursery business... the next step is yours.

Good Luck!

Kevin"

My advice to everyone too!
Thanks.... Kevin

Yup, I agree with your advise. I only bought my scions of the Thai Dwarf because I kept seeing your For Sale posts with all the fruits so I had to add it to my collection. Now the grafted branches have grown a lot in one year with tons of fruits. I will leave the Thai Dwarf plant sales to you, maybe will sell a few cuttings later with my other varieties that needs cutting every year. I just took a chain saw to my Black Pakistan trunks (6" trunk) on my big trees to cut them back to 8 ft since I can't really reach the fruits above that. Now I'm top grafting a lot of Silk Hope that I got from a friend on this forum. He tells me the Silk Hope tastes good, better than some of varieties I have for sale. Kevin, if you need a few cuttings by the end of the year, send me a PM.

SC4001992 I read at lots of sites online regarding on pruning of pakistan mulberry trees.  They all suggest not to cut 3plus inches in diameter branches.  Wounds will not heal and the trees will bleed to death.

Not true, I cut back more than a few of my large mulberry trees (over 3" diameter) with no issues. My big one that I let grow to 18 ft tall is one that I just cut back to 10 ft four months ago, now I'm thinking of cutting it back to 6 ft tall. After I cut the large trunk with my chain saw to 10 ft, this tree is growing a lot more branches from lower on the tree. Has too many branches with leaves so I can't see the fruits on the tree since they are buried in the leaves. I usually let my large trees grow for a year or two, then when its too tall, just cut it back to 5 ft with no issues, they just send out new buds/branches again and start all over. Bad thing with these larger trees is that the roots still keep growing so don't plant any in ground closer than 10 ft from your house wall, otherwise smarter to just keep them in a 30 gallon pot and they will fruit a lot.

I also have cut back my very tall growing 80ft Pakistani with 5 inch diameter trunk and branches without issue.
No bleeding... no death... just re-sprouted new more easily accessed branches.

Thai Dwarf on the other hand is much more compact in growth and very easy to maintain as a smaller fruit bearing bio machine! It takes to hard pruning like a champ and rewards you with a blitz of fruit with every cutting!

Yes, this Thai Dwarf is unusual for the amount of fruits it produces. I have been picking ripe fruit off of my grafted tree for over 2 wks, average  of 1-2 lbs of fruit daily. My record amount of fruits in a day was last weekend, 5.6 lbs. I still have only picked off half of the fruits (maybe less) on my tree, total so far of 25 lbs.

FYI, still can't believe that my grafted Thai Dwarf branches that started to fruit (ripe) in  3/28/21 still has tons of fruits. I have been picking more than 1 lbs of fruit each day from the 6 grafted branches. Today, 5/6, the tree still has at least half of the amount of fruits which are finally all ripening to dark black so it might be done in another week or so. That would be 5-6 weeks of continuous fruiting (1 lb picked every day) and today it looks like over 10 lbs of fruit are ripe and still hanging on the tree. I'm just not able to keep up with this tree. Maybe that's why someone made the name World's Best mulberry (which I'm pretty sure is the same as Thai Dwarf).

Kevin, I have to mention that I noticed even though my Thai Dwarf finished most of the fruits in May(4/3 thru 5/6)  , I have some straggler fruits that are ripening now and they tastes much better today. The fruit is firm and sweet (rate it 7/10) so there is hope that it is also a good tasting mulberry. Still can't believe that I had fruits on my tree for 5 weeks straight (1 lbs /day).

I cut back my collection of Thai Dwarf Mother plants and they have set their next wave of fruit... green now but soon to be ripe.
Let me know... if from your experience... any other variety of Mulberry sets and resets fruit in such a quantity.
I will definitely grow them as well.
Thanks.

Kevin, I can answer you now, No. The only other variety that will fruit like the Thai Dwarf is the World's Best (which I think is the same). I have both of these grafted on the same tree so I can say both have same size/tasting fruit and branch growth pattern is identical.

I now have most of the named varieties of mulberry (17) on my adult trees grafted (with fruits) and none of the others will provide as much fruit as the Thai Dwarf. My six branches grafted with Thai Dwarf produced over 35 lbs of fruit this season from April-May and these grafts are only one year old.

Just some data -

Thai Dwarf doesn't seem to respond with fruit if defoliated, it NEEDS to be cut back hard

Pakistani (and some other varieties) will respond with another round of fruits with just defoliation

You are correct... after it finishes fruiting... cut it back hard... hit it with fertilizer... and it will start fruiting all over again.
Plus you can easily root the cuttings and expand your collection.

Describe your defoliation technique please.

Thanks.

My pak is small so I just stripped off all the leaves and a few weeks later buds opened up w/new growth and some fruit..doing the same thing w/thai dwarf doesn't work, it needs an actual prune.

The defoliation technique is used in places like asia and israel to get multiple crops, usually they'll strip leaves and then bend down the branches.. I know some people who get another round of crops using partial defoliation as well.

Here is a video of someone talking about some of their techniques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuzAXHspxCE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuzAXHspxCE)

These Thai Dwarfs make excellent rootstock.
And very easy to root cuttings from.

Decent seller, but “ Yes... they are really nice plants!” C&P posted across all 6 listings all at once and in response to no one is a bit much...

I’m not sure yelling at him is the best way to address the concern, but it is violation of the forum rules to run so many steady listings.  The 6 listings which are constantly being self-bumped and take up approximately 1/4th of the front page should be consolidated into a single listing:

“If you are a nursery please keep all your sales items grouped under your nursery name to avoid constant spamming!”

Received my Thai mulberry today. Kevin was super helpful in answering all my questions. The seedling arrived nicely packed and showed no signs of stress. Looking forward to growing this variety along with others that I've collected recently.
