Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2023 Mango Season
« on: February 20, 2023, 10:51:58 AM »
Great pics and updates everyone! Trees are going even crazier around here now. Still looking for fruit set.

Was up around Lake Okeechobee this weekend, saw some mango trees in different states of blooming. A couple of tees had what appears to be cold burnt panicles, while others with fresher flowers looked healthy. Several trees had some pest issues, while a few looked very clean. Will be interesting to see how their season turns out.

Super awesome post! Thank you for sharing. =)

Nice to know we have several trees with nutritious leaves, and know of more to procure now as well.

It's pretty creamy and rich.

I'm not great at discerning cado taste, kind of subtle to me. But definitely can tell when eating a nice one. I've really like ON. Tree has started to produce finally, definitely a keeper. Just hope the squirrels will share.

Hi mate
Thank you for responding, will be interesting to hear once there are any other fruiting female trees other than pre mentioned
Thank you mick

Guaranteed big island when the time comes.  Hopefully Oahu and Kauai also.

Add South Florida to the "pre mentioned" sites! Give me 10 years or so.

Such a beautiful plant, different from all my other garcinias.

Great deal on seeds, not easy to find.

You probably got a hybrid or variation, but hard to say. Looks a lot like the flowers on the giant granadilla we grew a while back, don't think it was red either.

I agree Tortuga, cycads are cool plants to have around.

Since Coco Cream grows vigorously, 1/4 - 1/3 might be about right some years.

Glenn/CeciLove tree:

Have been seeing small green flies and honey bees on our mango blooms.

Sprinklers are fine as long as you aren't spraying low hanging flowers or fruit, or if you don't care about the lower fruit

Might cut 1/3 again then! =)

You do not want extra water spraying on flowers and fruit.

In addition to limiting sprinkler use in general, I block sprinklers when mangoes are flowering and fruiting, so only the base of trees get sprayed.

Drip irrigation would be better. I usually hand water if the rain doesn't provide enough, during flowering or fruiting times.

If it's really CCr, you will love it fliptop.

Leaf smell can vary, especially at different times of the year. Post fruit pics when it gets going, they have a look to them.

Wow, that CCr seedling inflorescence bundle looks sweet!

Summer 2022, chopped about 1/3+ of my CCr to graft other stuff, most of which did not take. Now, CC is blooming. Wish hadn't chopped so much.

Dosing may finish it off.

Root system is suspect, and can't tell for sure but think potting media and mulch may not be right.

Check out p. decaisneana and p. laurifolia. Both are floral and sweet enough, with no acidity. P. nitida is reportedly very good as well, have yet to try that one personally.

Thanks Abimael and Nate!

Seems more and more garcinias keep popping up, haven't met one I didn't like. Might have to squeeze a few more in =)

The de bicos are doing great!

Agreed, that is one beautiful Baileys Marvel!

It's funny when the blooms appear to be weighing a tree drown. Amazing inflorescence Palmcity!

They can ship, but have to be picked slightly early (yellow and green) and overnighted. Must be packed well. Have successfully sent them before, expensive.

Ended up getting a lot of rain

.39 yesterday, .97 today

Used the electric leaf blower to dry panicles on a few trees, lmao

...some spray, I blow dry

Great news Palmcity! Coco Cream blooming is no small thing, and 4 unique seedlings would be the most exciting to me as well

Thank you Puglvr1!

Beautiful Maha Calusa. Pretty fruits soon, to go with a pretty tree

Hear ya FruitNoob, getting that daily dose of dopamine from checking on flower spikes and fruitlets is a nice break from the crappy newsfeeds and stresses of life. Keep the updates rolling!

Hope to see some fruitlets soon on those greenhouse mangoes Jabo!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Delicious Papaya varieties
« on: February 04, 2023, 03:26:27 PM »
Red Lady is a very good for papaya, just decent overall as fruits go.

Papaya is best eaten green as a marinated veggie, imo.

Open minded to a ripened papaya that will change my perspective, waiting on one now.

Rob, ill go to whole foods right now and get you a Royal Star papaya. Those are delicious, normally the fruit tastes like vomit to me.
I've encouraged people to try growing those cause its just a great hybrid all around, works well eaten green too.

Will look for Royal Star tomorrow at the farmers market, and at WF if no luck there. Papaya is a must have plant, as it almost always has edible fruit (either green or ripe). Red Lady was good to me ripe, but a very small window of time before it was too funky. Improved varieties are exciting prospects.
