Title: What is the best tasting avocado variety you have had?
Post by: BonsaiBeast on January 05, 2018, 11:34:26 PM
There must surely be rare varieties of avocado with superior flavor to the ubiquitous haas.

There are probably several recommendations... but a properly tree ripened Hass Avocado tastes very good IMO.

I agree they are very delicious! I'm just curious if there a some little-known, yet superior varieties.

It seems to be the case with mangos, with all these crazy delicious varieties. Why not avocados as well?

I haven't tried every variety as there are probably hundreds or thousands, but as far as cultivated varieties, the best kind I have had so far was probably Kahaluu.

Hawaii best: Kahaluu, Yamagata, Malama. But i think i need to do a side by side taste test to really figure out my favorites and rate them. There are so many great avocado varieties here!
California best: Reed, Pinkerton, Bacon. Had a tree in San Diego i believed to be Bacon variety, and it was really outstanding as well as very prolific producer.

Reed, Shepard, Sharwil and Hazzard are my favourites and maybe Shepard tastes a little more buttery and rich than the others.

Sharwil is the most important commercial cultivar here. They are good, but not top tier in my opinion. But best cultivar is going to have a lot to do where they are grown. Maybe the Sharwil reaches perfection in Australian climate and soils, but not here? (Reminds me of the whole Kensington mango conundrum.)

Oscar I don't know but the KP conundrum is certainly baffling. I judge Avos as according to whether they are better or worse than Hass and most are not as good. Perhaps I was rash including Sharwil and omitting Pinkerton.

I recently discovered an unnamed tree at a friends home..that's about 60 years old and 50 feet tall, loaded with some of the best tasting avacados I've ever had..I have 10 named cultivars
avacado trees at my place but this one tops them all..I think better than Hass

Wouldn't it be great if someone would graft it onto young rootstock and propagate it?  Is all the fruit blemished like in the photo?

No West Indian avocado comes close to Hass in taste and production. The one above looks like yr typical WI.
5 year Hass properly prune with hundreds of fruits

Here on the central coast, several are excellent (besides Hass).  Jan Boyce, Stewart, Pinkerton, Edranol, and Hellen (2 L's).  Looks like a good year this year after last year's rains.  Hopefully more to come this year.

Gwen is probably my favorite, though there are others that I've tasted that have been similarly excellent (but are not in circulation) such as some unnamed varieties Julie Frink has and some Hawaiian ones that Ken Love has.  I think there are probably quite a few top-tier tasting avocados out there, many of which aren't really widely distributed.

Wow, is this subjective.  What makes the perfect avocado fruit (not tree)?  For me it has to have an easy to peel skin or better still a shell to spoon out of (like Reed), small seed, high oil - rich, creamy, buttery.  Reed is considered by many to be the best in the states.  Mine are ready and excellent after hanging for 14 months up to 18.

Another bonus is that the meat doesn't brown when cut.  I recently threw the 2nd half of a Sir Prize into a baggie and the next day it didn't have a smidgeon of brown on it.  Spaugh, you were right.

(https://s10.postimg.cc/c9r5pnzqt/Sir_Prize2nd_Day.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/c9r5pnzqt/)

(https://s10.postimg.cc/9fo0c905h/Sir_Prize_Jan4_2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/9fo0c905h/)

The only really good Hass we've had are those from Morro Creek Avocado ranch.  I can't remember when I've had a really good Hass.  The ones we're getting now are awful.

Barath, I have Gwen fruit hanging now and have trouble regarding when to harvest it.  Apparently it needs more than 12 mos. ?  Hard to beat the tree for a true runt, a dwarf.  Mine is a good 6 years old and no bigger than 4' H X 6' W.

Totally agree that this is so subjective.

A month or so ago, I found myself surprised to find that when I ate a Bacon side by side with a Hass, I slightly preferred the Bacon. Of course, Bacon's season was about prime then while Hass's prime taste will not come for a couple more months (in my yard in San Diego County). And I find Hass to taste awesome at the right time, as good as any other avocado I know.

I sometimes think Fuerte is my favorite, but it's not perfect. Sometimes it has a few fibers, the seed is on the large side, and sometimes the seed coat doesn't adhere to the seed. But dang it tastes so rich just to the right level for me.

Reed is hard to beat in almost every category. And the productivity blows most varieties away.

If you're just thinking of flavor, you might say Jan Boyce, for example. But it's not perfect as it doesn't peel as well as Hass does.

And how about Pinkerton?! Tastes great to me, plus its seed is tiny so you get so much flesh.

About when to harvest Gwen: it might help to refer to the release dates that the Cal. Dept. of Food and Ag. issues for commercial farmers. URL: http://www.californiaavocadogrowers.com/sites/default/files/documents/Avocado-Maturity-Release-2017-2018.pdf (http://www.californiaavocadogrowers.com/sites/default/files/documents/Avocado-Maturity-Release-2017-2018.pdf)

For Gwen, smalls can be picked starting April 3. I find it helpful to compare the release dates to other varieties I have. So, you might compare the Gwen release date to Hass (Jan. 16) or Lamb (July 17) just to give you the idea that Gwen is predicted to be mature some three months after Hass but three months before Lamb. It's just a prediction on their part, but I think it's useful all the same.

Thanks for the info Greg.  With our cooler weather dates are totally different than other states.  Reason why I asked about Gwen is based on critique of cados in the San Jose area and I quote - "Gwen: An "awesome avocado you don't see sold anymore. Those lucky enough to have a Gwen tree will appreciate the small tidy tree size, great flavor better than Hass if left to ripen the full 16-plus months it needs, productivity if you've got several other avocados that aren't Hass to pollinate it."  If I had more room I'd love to try a GEM.  Love Pinkerton and will soon graft a stick off my Frankencado onto a vigorous Oro Negro rootstock.  It's being run over by the vigor of its brothers - Holiday, Sir Prize, and Ardith. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/general-news/20100501/sharon-hull-this-week-in-the-garden-settling-the-avocado-question-once-and-for-all (http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/general-news/20100501/sharon-hull-this-week-in-the-garden-settling-the-avocado-question-once-and-for-all)

Forgot about fiber which I hate.  So far none have it.

Small seeds are really nice - Sharwil, Pinkerton, Sir Prize.

How is Greengold, which is a seedling of Sharwil?  Carlos was growing it, but we haven't heard from him since Hurricane Irma, which did a lot of damage to (devastated?) his grove.  It seemed like it might have potential for Florida.  Otherwise, what's the BEST TASTING AVOCADO FOR FLORIDA?  Pinkerton?

Around here I think folks often leave Gwen on the tree for almost 18 months, but you probably get more growing heat through the year and it'll be shorter for you.

Yes rating avocados is subjective. But then again rating the quality of any fruit (or food) is subjective. Still if you look at a list of people's favorites the same names will come up on the top over and over again.
Keep in mind though that the favorite cultivars of commercial growers does not have much to do with what is people's favorites. They choose mostly based on productivity, shelf life, uniformity, looks, disease resistance. Taste is only one small component for them. A lot of people wrongly assume that because a certain cultivar is the most widely grown that it must have the best quality, in terms of taste. We know this is not true with Tommy Atkins avocado, or Red Delicious apples (the old top selling cultivar), and i don't think it's true with Hass either. But it's not surprising when there are so many hundreds of cultivars of avocados.
The fuerte was the top commercially grown avocado for a long time before it was supplanted by Hass. There is evolution even in the Hass. They just keep calling it by the same name even though the trees are different than the Hass from decades ago, . This is just because the name is so implanted by now in people's minds and the marketers don't want to move on to a different name. Remarketing under a new name costs money and time to get consumer approval.

As long as it has pebbly skin, turns dark when ripe, is small in size, and is pear-shaped (it will sell)!

Otherwise, what's the BEST TASTING AVOCADO FOR FLORIDA?  Pinkerton?

Kicker is survival from disease pressures like anthracnose.  if you can't grow them than taste is moot.  From what I know about Florida and rubbing elbows with Carlos I would bet on Reed and Pinkerton which can take the heat and high RH.  To get anal anthracnose attacks fruit that has a skin less than  .20 mm.  According to a very comprehensive field trial study done in Weslaco, published in 1991, no anthracnose attacks occurred on fruit with skins .30 mm or better.

It's reported that high oil types like Hazzard and Rincon do well in the tropics.  I got sticks from U.C.R. which never took.

One RGV grower, border of Mexico and Texas, swears by Marcus Pumpkin.  Utuado also gets good reviews.

Bingo! Enter Hass.  (Been preaching this for years.)   Reason why Gwen didn't make it is because it didn't turn black upon ripening - market acceptance.  Didn't matter that it produces 3 times as much in half the acreage required by Hass.  Being the grand daughter of Hass it was initially pushed to de-thrown Hass as the commercial variety.

Did I ad edronol and pinkerton to my list? I am near the tropical limit of where Guatemalan avos can fruit and survive. Hass, fuerte and so many others are unsuitable and it took a lot of trial and error to determine that only wurtz, hazzard,Reed and shepard were worth growing. People keep trying to grow sharwil only like me to be disappointed. Luckily the 4 that can grow here are good quality types but they would prefer to be 1600km poleward of me.

My friend's Choquette avocados had those "stones" some years, but not every year.  And if I recall correctly, most years it did NOT have them.  But the tree got too large for a small yard so it had to be removed.  It was a good, but not great, variety, and looked similar to the avocado pictured here.  It was a large avocado.

One thing that is not mentioned frequently enough is that avocados increase in richness when left on the tree an extra long time. I discovered this when I tasted some Hass from my tree that was hanging about 18 months. The butter factor was so high, it was like I was eating a Reed or some Hawaiian avocado.

Good point.  That's why even West Indian avocados grown in Florida taste pretty good when they stay on the tree long enough--Simmonds, Choquette, etc.

Yes, type of cultivar is only one factor affecting taste and oil content. Fruits should be left on until at least until after the fruits are no longer glossy. Other things also affect taste, like soil type, fertilizer, amount of sun exposure, climate, etc. So it's not really completely fair to compare quality of different cultivars, unless they came from the same farm, and had same growing conditions.

Kahaluu can go as high as 28% oil. We have a whole range of avocados here from watery West Indian types to very high oil types, and everything in between. I believe we have a bigger selection of cultivars here than anywhere else in USA. There are so many available for sale. Unfortunately most vendors don't label the cultivar names.
This poster lists 107 types grown here, and it only scratches the surface of what's available.

I'd like to share this wonderful file but no go - can't log into their Facebook page and for some reason the file doesn't copy so I can paste it.  Probably a thing with Adobe Acrobat since I'm using the free download.

Thanks

Thanks, but even Chrome doesn't work.  That's OK. Some how I got the file when first posted.  If someone wants to read it I'll just email it to them.

I noticed Julie Frink recommending Holiday in her "if you had one avocado variety to plant....."   ditty.  How's the taste and quality of that fruit compared to Reed which it's a sport of?

I thought she said reed came from nimlioh?

My holiday has flowered a few times but would always drop the blooms. Very flimsy. Reportedly 32 ounce fruit with excellent taste. I got frustrated with it after 2016 when a little wind blew away hundreds of flowers, so I pruned back to main branch and let it regrow. Had a fuller shape now l.

About Holiday:
I'm not sure why Julie Frink mentions it as one to plant if you have a small space in your yard, except that the tree is very small. I've never known a Holiday tree that is very productive, especially compared to some other smallish avocado trees like Pinkerton or Gwen. My suggestion to someone with a small space would be to grow one of those or a Reed or Lamb, and use your pruning shears to keep it to size. You're guaranteed to get more fruit that way. And isn't the fruit the reason to grow an avocado tree?

So what is the best tasting avocado for Florida? West coast and Tx reviews won't necessarily apply to us down here.

I am growing Oro Negro. Tree is probably 8 feet or more and quite bushy. No flowers yet. Was thinking of adding another variety/top work, but not sure what would be best to compliment ON.

Because my trees are mainly in pots, they get stressed very easily. Between hot dry summers and Santa Ana winds, they defoliate easily but are slow to leaf out again, and when they do it’s mainly at the new growth tips, leaving the trees with long stubby bare branches exposed to the hot sun. As I e learned more about growing trees in pots, I’ve gotten better and the trees are healthier but a part of that is pruning them back and letting them grow out again. That way I can reset the trees configuration and have leaves that shade the main trunk and branches.

I think the lesson is that when the tree isn’t growing the way it should (for whatever reason) pruning can give you a second chance.

More info on Holiday (originally XX3):
(Guat) 18-28 oz. fruit, pear shaped, green, dark yellow flesh, excellent flavor, medium pit, peels easily, glossy leaves, persea mite and thrip resistant, small tree with skirting shape, A blossom type. Produces well. Fruit is hidden inside tree. Holds well. Tree should be made available to the home gardener for it has the best fruit for a small tree that I am familiar with &is better that any available at nurseries at this time. Several trees at South Coast Research Station, Irvine, CA. (J.R.Frink 1998)This is a "grandchild" of the old "Murrieta Green" variety, which had a green, good-quality fruit, commercially too large; on a tree that was short & spreading-easy to pick,& to spray if necessary. XX3 is a good producer of rather similar large, fine, green fruits. The tree is almost unique among thousands of seedlings in that it tends to sprawl on the ground. This latter trait rules it out commercially-plus the over-sized fruit. Commercially, XX3 is without value. But, for backyard purposes it might be useful in CA. An avocado tree that remains very low could be desirable where a view, or sunlight transmission, is wanted; or, it could be grown on a (sturdy) fence. The green skin would be no detriment, & the large fruit size could be a non-commercial advantage. (Bergh 2000)

I agree with both these points. Another point, precociousness. Most homeowners want fruit now. The younger the tree that produces fruit, the happier the buyers.  People don't want to wait 3 years.  Holiday, Lamb Hass, Hass, Fantastic all produced fruit the first year out of a 3 gal. I didn't let them hold, but that would make homeowner's happy with a dooryard tree.

I'm gonna say Reed is the best all around SoCal avocado.  Its compact upright tree, heavy bearer, self fertile, excellet taste.   Doesnt suffer from heat stress or salt burn.  Whats not to like?  What I don't understand is why its not in every supermarket?

Reed Reed Reeeeeeeeeed!!!!

If I was Marty McFly I would use my DeLorean to go back in time, murder Rudolph Hass and make Reed the standard avocado of California and Mexico.

Avocado trees have a shallow spreading root system, get frequent water and enjoy a thick mulch of their own leaves.  If you can't mimic that then you won't be successful.   The only way I know of doing it is like I am with large, wide RootBuilder pots.  They belong in the ground.

A network of white feeder roots can be found (or should be if you're doing this right) under the mulch as shown with mulch pulled back on a Reed.

The industry i.e. CALAVO doesn't care about taste, only ease of packing, warehousing, shipping and market acceptance - if it aint black, it aint beautiful.   ;)  Part of the reason why U.C.R.'s attempt to bump Hass with Gwen (which produces twice as much in half the acreage) was the skin remained green.  The Hass we get around here is often in poor shape with bruises or black spots under the peel and immature.

Sad, didn't believe it at first, but the Mexican drug cartels are controlling much of Mexico's avocado industry and doing what they do best - threatening and intimidating farmers, packers, local cops.

I don't think we've found it yet!  Oro Negro is good, but it has a huge seed, and so far for me it hasn't borne a lot of fruit.  Sure wish we had somewhere in South Florida that was growing and experimenting with dozens of varieties like UCR does in California.  Carlos in Homestead was doing his best, and then apparently Hurricane Irma wiped him out.

Am damn sad for Carlos....first the beetle problem then Irma.  As a farmer who's been where he has and is now regarding getting your ass kicked by mother nature, his spirit is probably wiped out more than his orchard.  Fighting mother nature and all the crap govt. regs and rules is a young man's game.

I'd say Carlos' YouTube videos and myavocadotrees.com are your best references as a Florida grower.
