Does anyone know anything about this (I think) Mango?
« on: June 05, 2012, 06:37:33 PM »
I picked up a few of these at the farmer's market today.  It is a tiny fruit, looks and tastes like a mango with no fiber and has an no seed in the endocarp.  A very delicious mango/fruit what ever it is. Does anyone have any information on it's identity?

Thanks,
Richard

Looks something like Thai Everbearing....but it is a bit more kidney shaped than most of the fruits I've grown or seen. Probably a seedling selection of some sort.

No, I guess in looking at it in comparison to the quarter, it is about half the size of a Thai Everbearing that reaches full size.  Some are smaller, but not that small.

Way smaller than any Ataulfo I have ever seen and shaped somewhat differently. Color is right, though.

Richard,

I picked up similar looking mangoes from a market in Little Saigon, was excellent tasting. The mangoes I ate had seeds in them.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

That's what i am thinking also,  its common to have sterile fruit in seedlings of a hybrid. this sometimes happens with Papaya and other fruit. I have read that a "seedless" fruit sometimes will be underdeveloped because it will lack the hormones that it produces to stimulate growth, ( this would explain the small fruit size ).

I noticed that there is a Seedless Sindhu mango reported in India, this I'd like to see.

Based on the size in the picture, for it to be an Ataulfo it would mast likely have to be a nubbin as that is way smaller than any Ataulfo I have ever seen (but nubbins usually have normally developed seeds, just smaller).  If all of the fruit was of the same size, that would eliminate them being a nubbin, plus nubbins are usually not harvested and worth of marketing.  I would begin by contacting the buyer for the market to find out what it is, or what they purchased it as and it origin (if they will disclose the info).  Something is just not right with the look and size of the fruit.

They taste like Autulfo but are much smaller (about  one fifth the size) and in my opinion better tasting. The fact that they had a bunch of them and that there was a frenzy to get them makes me think that they are not "nubbins" but a variety of some sort. Or possibly some kind of hormone treated tree that will give small non-fertile fruit. Anyway I have consumed more than 20 so far and not a single seed inside the endocarp.

Null,
Did they have seeds or just a flat, empty endocarp? I would love to get some seeds to see if they grow true.

Had seeds, very thin endrocarp. Some were aborted seeds I believe, I have one that I am trying to germinate right now.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

RTreid...are you saying that mango is only around 3-3 1/2"? Someone on the other forum (GW) posted something very similar to your picture a while back but I can't seem to find the thread...

I remember the size being around 3-4" for this mango as well...very curious to see what they are.

Out of curiousity how much were they selling them for? Thanks!

pug,

They even smaller than that, maybe 2.5 to 3 inches long.  They were selling for about $4/lb. I'll go back next week to see if I can find any more information on them.

A Pico is basically the same as a Philippine...so size-wise a Pico would be the same as a Philippine pr PPK.  I did see a nubbin pPPK yesterday that looked just like this size-wise but again, it was a nubbin among a batch of normal sized PPKs.

I was at the local town fleamarket last month and a guy was selling Pico mangoes flown in from the Philippines. They were just as small as those in your pics. I'm almost confident (in your case) that a seedling Altaulfo tree of the grower went off the deep end genetically and produced tiny sized mangoes. Genetic drift? LOL! Honestly, there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of different strains of seedling type trees in this side of the world that I have actually SEEN with my own eyes and they have a lot of variance. The Altaulfo is derived from the seedling races found in the Philippines, so it may be exhibiting this sort of characteristic, IMHO.
