Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Angie Mango

Hearing that it tastes like Carrie does not bode well for the future of the little angie I have planted in the yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / south florida avocado recommendations...
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:38:07 PM »
Giving serious thought to chopping down the 30+ foot behemoth in the yard that only produces every three years and replacing it with two cado trees whose size I can manage. Rather than rely on the PIN site, figured I'd ask here.

Like the creamy and don't really want anything during mango season. Ideally want stuff for right about now and the Oct/Nov/Dec timeframe. Delicious and productive.

Thoughts?

Sounds like BS to me. I trim our trees frequently (also in Springs) and have never had an issue. Coral Springs is not great at making its ordinances public though, so who knows... either way, it will be a cold day in he'll when the city tells me how or who can cut my trees.

still have a few Kent.

Hey Mike,

I think my mom contacted you today about the LZ and other 25 gal size mangoes. Take care of her - she's my mommy!

Mr. Clean, I'll come dig it up for you and bring it to my yard and next year I'll let you know if the fruit splits again!

Since this thread has already gone to the dogs (drum roll please), I feel comfortable in adding that every time I see one of your posts I immediately break into song. He's a fruit box hero... with starfruit in his eyes....

For those of you with avocadoes that mature in October/November, how big are they on your trees now? I've been standing under the monster for minutes at a time hopeful to make out some sort of fruit somewhere, but thus far nothing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Goodbye Pina Colada Mango Tree
« on: July 30, 2014, 03:10:04 PM »
Hate to say it, but Rob is a filthy liar. I have a 15 year old cocktail mango tree composed of pina colada, sweet tart, galaxy, and orange sherbet.

For those in doubt, here's the picture:

Granted, carambola fruits so prolifically that losing some fruit to ants is not a huge deal. That said, anyone else have ants burrowing into carambola on the tree and basically eating the fruit from the inside out? We've had several fruit this year that basically collapse/disintegrate when touched due to being eaten from the inside. Kinda gross, but I guess that's life. Anyone with an effective ant control for trees with near mature fruit on?

535
O sure... One week after I bought and planted a Kari lol.

are we talking about the giant avo tree in the back left of your property?  IF so, i would have a hard time believing that it's a pollination issue.  I could see a light bearer, but no fruit at all???  it's a huge tree

Yep - the giant one. It flowered profusely in the Spring but I can't make out a single fruit on the tree. They ripen in October/November, so I assume they'd be big enough to at least see a few by now. That said, the leaves pretty much act as camouflage - I've stood staring at the same spot and not noticed fruit for a minute of hard staring. I suppose anything is possible, but we've only got fruit from this tree in 2010 (when we moved in) and again last year.

Need some help here - we have a huge unknown avocado tree in the yard (must have been here at least a decade before we moved in). It makes delicious avocados in the October/November timeframe - produced a ton of them in 2010 when we moved in and then did not produce until last year (2013). The tree flowered profusely earlier this Spring, but now upon inspection of the tree, I see no fruits forming. Is this normal?

I'd hate to waste so much space in the yard (I could probably plant 3 - 4 trees in the space it takes up) for a tree that only produces every couple years.

The two Edgars I got from Zills were delicious.

yum... I think I have a while before that twig I got from you makes fruit lol.

Thanks to a visit to Zands' house over the weekend, I discovered that what I thought to be a Kari carambola I bought a couple years ago is actually something else (at this point, all signs point to Fwang Tung). Even though I still enjoy the fruit, that moment was like finding out my whole life has been a lie (e.g. Truman Show). Probably should have recognized it sooner - the fruit never oranges up, is not as long as Kari, etc.

Now I need to figure out what to do - I have 2 trees that were sold to me as Kari (by the same vendor at roughly the same time). One of them definitely is not. The other is huge and the fruit are still green, so can't quite figure it out yet. Also have an Arkin, so don't necessarily want yet another carambola, but at the same time don't want to dig up the fwang tung.

So how has your soul been crushed by discovering that you have something you didn't think you had? Is there a support group?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Reviews

Devoured my first Seacrest, which was supplied by Rob over the weekend. No pictures, but nicely ripened to a full yellow color. Very Citrusy undertones with the flavor, somewhat more understated than lemon zest. Gotta say, I'm digging the citrusy mangoes that I have tried this year. Very pleasing flavor. Super juicy and delicious.

Probably pulling a Carrie out and replacing with something that doesn't make me gag. Depends if I love a particular variety or want to top work the Carrie into a cocktail.

Har gets down here. Hire Har to transform it into an LZ and a few others. The bud wood is available. I know someone who had Har do some topworking on a large existing mango tree they were not so pleased with.

Here is fwang tung carmbola

Hmm as you saw today that definitely looks like what was sold to me as Kari. That is pretty disappointing.

We were very disappointed in our Glenn the first year it fruited. Now it's one of our favorites. As of its second year it was great.

Davie is not so big.

As my good friend Liam Neeson said...

I will look for you. I will find you. And I will eat your mango.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / LZ season over?
« on: July 12, 2014, 05:11:52 PM »
Was hoping to try my first LZ this season in the quest to figure out what's getting grafted on my beanstalk seedling tree. Doesn't seem like Zills is going to have any left, but I will give them a call tomorrow. Any leads in the Broward area?

How many people here gave her money? I'm a lawyer (as are a few others on this board) - don't do criminal law, but I have assisted a few clients with gathering evidence and presenting it to local authorities for pursuit/prosecution. The key is presenting them with a clean package showing the trail of what happened. She appears to live in Tamarac, so that would probably need to be done with Broward Sheriff's Office. That said, if she's accepting money from people via paypal/other electronic means, she could possibly be looking at federal wire/mail fraud issues (did a brief stint at the US Attorney's Office, so I know a thing or two about that).

This person has not visited the board since June 30 - I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt because the crime (if true) is not worth the potential punishment here. Most law enforcement is lazy when it comes to financial crimes, but once they get interested, the sentences are extremely harsh. It just doesn't make sense for the dollars at issue here. Not to mention possible 'vigilante' justice - it takes all of 30 seconds to find her address, phone numbers, etc. - there's enough crazy people out there that I would not risk pissing off someone with anger management issues over $20 - $50.

Those of you that sent her money should message each other and start putting together your emails, messages, paypal statements, etc. The more organized you are, the better chance you have of getting somewhere with local or federal authorities.
