Very good morning, dear friends growers, my name is Julio Mejia and I live in the central part of Guatemala, I am currently looking seeds black sapote (Diospyros digyna) ignored the seed production season, but will wait, in return I can send fresh seeds green sapote (Pouteria viridis) this year from last, round fruit, sweet and doughy, or for next year white sapote seeds (Casimiroa edulis) the variety is a cultivar that I have selected for my family for years, large fruit 4 to 6 inches, very sweet flesh and 2-4 seeds, much aroma, Thanks for everything and we are in contact.

GG I'll have a look in the markets at lunch time (5 hrs from now) and maybe pick up a fruit. The season is ending but there should be 6 ot 7 varieties still there and the last fruit of the season maybe in 2 weeks. If I can get giant mossman, flying saucer or maher varieties I will let you know as these are very large impressive black sapotes.

Hola Julio!

Do you have some pictures of your green zapote? Sorry I don't have black zapote seeds right now, maybe in April ;)

Hello, I'm not sure whether i can find black zapote fruits since the last of the year mini season is close to finish, last i saw them in the market were big and goodlooking but that was three weeks ago, anyway I'll try to check again just in case, I'm interested on your pouteria viride seeds, i know they are big so one or two seeds will work for me of course if you still have some left. Greets from the close west.

I found one of the last flying saucer black sapotes of the season at lunch time and I wonder if it has any seeds. Not a 3kg + monster but still bigger than average.

Soren it is chicken feed compared to the whopping mossmans and flying saucers last year. Black sapotes that are too big are hard to eat and anything over 3kg gets wasted.

GG, bad news, the 3 big ripe black sapotes I acquired with a view to sharing the seeds turned out to be seedless. The technical term is total B.S.

Here is a pic from last season showing what they look like inside. It is counter-intuitive that the big ones are so often seedless.

Seedless black zapotes. That's something i still have yet to find here in black zapote land :) no named cultivars are known but you can find all sizes, i prefer the regular sized ones to be better, not many seeds, sweeter and not earthy taste, also i remember ones that are almost black  skinned when ripen to be specially good.

I agree , bigger is not always better , I am very happy with those I grow . When seeing the size of those Mike posted I was tempted to ask for seeds but decided against it , more than 75 % of my fruit goes to waste , have 3 producing trees . Restaurants don't buy them , too messy....and I don't think freezing when ripe for later use is an option ??
Santos , do you have any suggestion , maybe there are recipes in Guerrero that I am not aware of ...

The success of Black Zapote here is in the restaurants/hotels/aguasfrescas industry, when in season you can find in most natural/vegans restaurants black zapote drinks, smoothies, shakes. Mixed with orange or mandarine even lemon, in the streets black zapote aguafresca is easy to find. I was surprised when i found Black Zapotes in Superama ( a Walmart's store with gourmet supplies ) kinda expensive but there it was heh. People with big trees on the outskirts use the leaves too... not sure for what :)

Pd: I know it's used in alcoholic drinks too, never tasted it that way since i don't like alcohol.

Luc,

I've heard of people mixing them half and half with whipped cream and freezing to make a sort of ice cream.  It’s supposed to be good although I’ve never tried it.    If CRFG ever put out a cook book it might be in there.

Just found a recipe here: http://rfcarchives.org.au/Next/Fruits/BlackSapote/R_BSapoteMousse1-84.htm

Luc the big 2 or 3 varieties are of excellent taste and quality but it is a fruit that it is hard to consume many lbs of in one sitting. Standard sized fruit on named varieties or even minis (eg goose egg) are probably better options for the casual consumer not running a smoothie chain.

That one was seedless and some fruit from that type can weight well over double that particular fruit.

i thought most diospyros species without a male tree nearby will ALWAYS give seedless fruit.
