Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit in Fort Lauderdale
« on: March 24, 2017, 09:05:08 PM »
I'll be in Fort Lauderdale in April and I'm wondering if there are some places I should visit to try fruit (even if it's just a mango besides tommy atkins) I'm also wondering about nurseries for orchids or carnivorous plants and botanical gardens beside the Fairchild gardens since I don't know of any others.

Thanks.

It grows here, I'll try to find some.

Forum really for fruit or edibles, that being said I'm with you i just bought from logees.com hibiscus and in the fall of 2015 two jade vines that are blooming now spectacular they have a good strain of the jade vine ,god it's almost blue I was thinking maybe ph or minerals affect the color like hydrangea

I mean, Hibiscus is used in drinks and desserts, so I'd say it's edible.

How much? Would you be interested in trading for viable seeds of the lemon guava?

ajeshcool47  had Inga edulis for sale. 2 seeds for 5 including shipping. They are enroute now and shipper said he sent 3?
Its nice not to have to buy 10 seeds. Trees and More offers the whole fruit and probably will sell you some seeds. I don't
think it is edulis? FFF had small Achachiaru seedlings for sale. Fruitscapes doesn't have either available? I would ask Steve or Jesse
I bet they have or will get Inga this year?
Mike

Are full fruits for Inga still available from trees and more? Very interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Suggestions for container fruits

Miracle fruit works well for me. Also dragonfruit, mandarin, kumquat, lemon(lime), blueberry, strawberry(berries in general), sapodilla,

How big of a container are we talking about? Some people grow banana in containers. Dr. John Yonemoto grows mangos in 200 gallon "containers" in greenhouses in Japan.

Well, I need to fit it in an 8x12 greenhouse that's about 8 feet in height. I can grow mandarin, kumquat, berries, etc. outside as well as dragonfruit. Sapodilla might need to hit the greenhouse. I have one miracle fruit seedling now.

I had my first maprang couple days ago. Skin wasn't as edible as I heard before and fruit tasted like average mango. Since I'm not a collector in my opinion it's not worth growing. But I'm sure many of you have different perception. It's cute fruit.

Will you be selling the seeds, or is it from a plant that isn't yours?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Yuzu & Sudachi

It seems you all mist something!  ;D
The main think to use in yuzu is the zest. Incredible taste and smell. It is the king of citrus and the more expensive.
What to do with yuzu:
- Jam
- Yuzucello, Much better than limoncello
- Yuzu curd, Incredible
- Yuzettes, like orangettes: candied rind with or without chocolate coat.
And many other things...

Yes, it also very good in pastries such as some incredible Yuzu tarts my friend made me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rotting seeds
« on: February 19, 2017, 12:18:16 PM »
I have found that bottom heat is essential for most sub-tropical & tropical seeds and higher humidity in most case's too! ;)

All my other seeds germinated without it. I keep it in a warm bright room with a humidity structure. The issue is that they're not sterile?

I don't believe you need to sterilize your growing media and it's probably impossible without the proper knowledge and equipment. what you need is to minimize the rotting process by growing your seeds in an acidic environment/media.

Makes since, although the theory of bad seeds seems to be the most accurate since I haven't had problems with their seeds that need to be planted immediately.
