Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:43:01 AM »
Hello, my name is Ethan and I live in California's central valley with my wife and two kids.  A Natal plum bonsai at the Huntington Gallery and Arboretum and a David Sibler dragon fruit plant bought at their plant sale lead me down this road of excess.  Gardening has always been in my life inspired by various family members with vegetable gardens and orchards plus my grandfather's love of cacti.  I live in zone 9 which allows me a to grow a wide range of fruits like paw paws, stone fruits, bananas, guavas and with a little effort mangoes, pineapples, sugar apples, lychee, longan and lots of other stuff.  Of course I couldn't stop there and somehow have ended all sorts of fun experimental plants and a few that would be a miracle to fruit like durian and mangosteen.  I know absolutely everything there is to know about growing tropical fruit trees just choose to play dumb, very dumb.

It is great to see such a turn out on the new forum and such a wide range of experience and knowledge.  I had to chuckle seeing 'newbie' under a few of your names. :D

Thanks PJ and Murahilin for the time and effort.

My mangoes are still asleep but I've the beginning of lychee blooms forming on my Sweetheart and Kaimana plus blooms on the dwarf ambarella in the GH.  So it is about to get fun here too. :)

I'm not sure it can fruit in a container. Or can it?

CRFG ran an article about a gentleman in Moscow who fruited a guanabana in a container and a member on yahoo recently fruited his in a container so go for it!  Tracking down a grafted one might make it easier.

Nice. How are the grafts from the FL budwood doing?

The annonas are doing great, some of them were blooming on and off all last summer.  I even tried to pollinate one bloom w/cherimoya pollen, thankfully it didn't set.

Are those passion fruits ripe? I have a bunch on my vine, but they're all green.
The first few that have fallen off so far are greenish with purple undertones, put them on the counter for a few days and they color up.  The summer ripened fruits are much better tasting IMO.  As far as having dibs, you dont even have to wait for the weather to warm. ;D

Thanks NewGen,
I have a passionfruit vine growing on the arbor above the GH and fruits are just starting to drop and roll off.  Kind of caught me by surprise the other day.

Your photos always have such nice composition Noel.  I was hesitant to try canistel at first since the name egg fruit didn't really strike me.  A kind friend sent me some canistel fruit off his tree, they were great!  It was moist(ish) and the flavor had pumpkin/squash characteristics but also had hints of fresh off the stalk sweet corn and 0% latex.  I baked some canistel cupcakes and canistel oatmeal cookies with it which got rave reviews.  Makes me want to try a lot more varieties, including Fitzpatrick, Fairchild #2 and Ross sapote.

Exotica or Ong's?

Thanks again guys.

Durian, mangosteen and achachairu plantation, Jay, you are going to need a much bigger GH.

Noel, some of the seedlings are sugar apples and rollinias that came from your stock.

LL, if you want one of those precious, rare, one of a kind Juan's pulasan, it is going to cost you......shipping.  I have some other fun things you might want, let me figure out how to send you a message.

Thanks gents for the kind words.

LL, I think I have 3 of Juan's pulasans but only one of them is inside.  The one inside looks different than the other two and my other pulasan's.  The leaves almost have a purple-ish undertone to them plus it is the most vigorous.  Assuming they live, when it warms up I can send you one of the outside ones.  The price for the inside one........how much is a plane ticket back to PR?

Great job N/Z, it is nice to know what can be done in a container, that is the eventual fate of many of my plants.  Ewais mango?  Good to see you can fruit a banana in a pot, one gent suggested it needed to be 100gal+ to have it happen.  I might get some D. Jamaican red fruit someday after all.

Since my addiction uh I mean hobby has grown, so has my need for winter protection.  I'm lucky to have a giant grape arbor that was here when I moved in because it made it easier to slap together an even bigger greenhouse for this year.  Not only that but I created a GH inside my new GH for the more tropical stuff.  We've seen plenty of days of hard frost this year and been down to 28F a couple of times but inside the GH the 'main room' has not gotten below 52F.  The other room runs about 10F colder which is good because I want my lychee to get chill units.

The original GH, it is a swing arbor with passion fruit growing over the top during most of the year

with alien invaders

the GH for my Valencia Pride is on the right and the plastic on the left is the new GH

night time with the lights and heater going

looking in through the 'front door', epiphytic cacti on the right, hoyas, salaks, dragon fruit, seedlings straight ahead.  Back wall of the main room (GH inside the GH) on the left.  Dragon fruit and other epicacti probably don't need to be protected as much next year.

Standing at the very back corner shooting towards the sunshine (main room on L).

peek into the main chamber with star apple, rambutan, pulasan, chempedak, wax jambu, garcinias, etc.

I think I might know why I have so many plants (one reason)  one of 2 GH inside the house.  Lots of seedlings, sugar apple, black sapote, peppers, flacourtia, lemon leaf, clove, etc.

The other indoor GH, a few of the extra special ones, durians, mangosteens, Juan's pulasan, cashews, marang, acai, velvet tamarind, recent PR plants and others.  A few plants were brought in just in case the new outdoor GH completely failed.

cant wait for spring to get here,
