I have always given free plants and seeds. Some times they pick them at my place and others I mail.
When I mail seeds I charge only what I pay for postage. I get paid  AFTER they get their seeds (so they know how
much I paid). Forum members are very honest, I have always been paid. Remember free is not always free.

Sorry about your mangoes. They are squirrels eating them. Same here.

I am going to have Green Sapote seeds (Pouteria Viridis  var.  Whitman )   in the next few days. Not too expensive, they are free. Pay only for shipping. Also if you are interested I have seeds of Mamey Sapote  (pouteria sapota - var. Pace ) and seedlings of mamey sapote (diff. varieties - I did not label them so dont know which are they. I have magana, pace and pantin.). Of course they are all free for the asking. Remember to pay only for shipping. Any body else interested just e-mail me to make arrangement.

Mamey (pouteria sapota)  Viejo should do well in your area, Green Zapote ( pouteria viridis) is more cold tolerant than Mamey zapote  and better tasting.

« on: March 12, 2012, 01:51:14 PM »
This Sunday I was driving  north of Orlando Fl. and saw several mango trees ( 15 - 20 feet ) with lots of panicles. I would like to know from our members how far north have you seen mango trees and if poss the variety.

Went to Costco ( Hialeah, Florida)  this morning and to my surprise they had tropical fruit trees for sale. They had  Valencia Pride Mango, Simmons Avocado, Russell Avocado in 7g  pots. Carrie mango, UF Sun Peach and other tropical fruit trees in 3g pots.

I have not imported lychee and yumberry but I have done so for mango from Thailand. The process is extremely tedious. In a nutshell , the permit took 5 to 6 months and they had to be quarantine for two years. ( I remember the many phone calls to diff gov, dept. and the unannounced tree inspections from them.)
After having said that. I would be interested in buying some mango trees.

Do any of you mango maniacs (like me ) know how to spell FRAUD (intentional deception made for personal gain). Tomorrow I am going to uproot my 18 foot sweetsensation  (aka sweethearty) and drag it to Hopkin and get my money back.

After reading the planting instructions from Ex. I  have been planting my trees the same way as Ex. since I planted my first tree , with one small diff. I do not add fertilizer after planting. Results are excellent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are grafting knives necessary?
« on: January 31, 2012, 03:08:44 PM »
I have used all types of knives for grafting,  for the past 4 years I used my trusty Leatherman knife  (I have grafted a few trees ). If you are new at grafting use the recommended grafting knife. Dont forget to clean your knife every time you graft a tree, I use a chlorine solution.

I have 10 mango trees on the north side of my property and they are doing very well.
They are 12 feet apart, how far apart are your trees. I prune  them every year to keep their hight 7 ft by 6 ft wide.
I wonder if I can make a hedge of dwarf mango trees?.
