Tropical Fruit Discussion / Artocarpus ID
« on: July 06, 2018, 02:49:14 PM »
Who can tell me what this Artocarpus is?
It comes from seeds from a friend that said she bought a round jackfruit at an asian store.
Can jackfruit have 5 lobes?  Or is this an hybrid or something else entirely?
This is 1 year old and the leaves just changed shape.

Is there any finger lime collector here?
I am intrigued by the finger limes, but so far my experience with them hasn't been overwhelming.
I saw the description of the registered varieties and they seem to vary a lot in taste and juiciness, is it true or it's just marketing.
Juiciness especially has been a disappointment for me, since I couldn't taste yet a finger lime which would pop in my mouth, mostly I feel like eating lemon pulp.
Does some variety really "explode" more than the others?

On another note, what about the varieties that are described as having spicy apple taste and apricot? I really can't picture it. Is it true? Varieties like Red Champagne for example.

I'm a big fan of kumquat hybrid and I was wondering how come there is no hybrid with big fruit yet?
I think it could be a very interesting fruit commercially, it's strange there isn't more hybridization testing.
Something like a orange or a grapefruit cross which maintain the size and combine the sweet skin.
I have an orangequat variegated and while the taste it's exactly like orange, it's still a kumquat in size.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can anybody ID this avocado?
« on: April 09, 2018, 12:05:19 PM »
Hi, last year I bought 2 avocado grafted on Water Hole, and left the rootstock grow since I want to keep a pure mexican variety.
I bought from a nursery which I think buy from viveros blanco and since I can't find anything about Water Hole and the pictures on the website look awfully similar to Walter Hole(with an extra L) I thought it was that.
Problem is the leaves doesn't resemble the few I can find about Walter Hole, and it doesn't have the usual anise smell of the mexican avo.
The leaf is huge and almost two times that of the bacon you can see on the right(although it doesn't seem from the picture). Also it was damaged more than the  Bacon and Hass growing on it.
Any idea what's that?
Other roostocks Viveros Blanco use are Mexicola, Nachar, Maoz and Lula.

I saw this fruit on facebook, the seller says it's a jackfruit but it seem more like a small chempedak.
Can you recognize the species and the cultivar? He doesn't seem to speak much english.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado tree water requirements
« on: January 14, 2018, 06:48:27 AM »
I often read comments online about how water hungry is Avocado cultivation.
Since I grow plants for hobby and I use a water well, I never paid attention to how much water I do use.
How water hungry are Avocado trees compared to other fruit trees?
What happen if you don't give it enough water? Will it not fruit at all or will the fruit be smaller or less tasty?

Citrus General Discussion / Meiwa Kumquat fruit have no joice
« on: May 31, 2017, 10:54:15 AM »
Hello,
Today I just bought a Meiwa tree and to my surprise the fruit was 4-5cm and completely juiceless.
Literally squishing the fruit all I could get is half a drop of juice. Is this normal?
Yes the fruit was sweeter than normal kumquat but mostly because it had almost no pulp inside, it looked like I was eating only the peel.
Not a pleasant experience at all.
Is this normal? Is it because it didn't ripen fully ? The fruit was already orange like a regular kumquat, maybe little lighter.
Is there any way to distinguish it from Fortunella Japonica?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Artocarpus Hirsutus
« on: May 19, 2017, 09:42:44 AM »
I noticed there is very few info on this plant not just on this forum but everywhere.
Who is growing it? Is it more cold hardy than jackfruit?
What about resistance to pathogens?

I live in Italy in a 9b zone, but I think our winter is longer than USA, so probably like 9a even if temps are 9b.
I just got some seeds from India and I am planning to put some in the ground. Any success stories in similar locations?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recalcitrant seeds stored in water
« on: May 08, 2017, 04:04:10 PM »
I got several recalcitrant seed from Brazil and they were shipped in small bottle containing water. The shipment took roughly 20 days but I have read that seed cannot be stored for long in water. Do you think they are still viable?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lucuma cv Prada
« on: March 17, 2017, 06:42:18 PM »

Looking for green sapote seeds that can ship to Italy. Also some lucuma seed moist variety(de seda?). If there are other pouteria cold hardy as these let me know.
Would like to graft them on my dry lucuma tree.
Possibly somebody who already have a reputation as a seller.

On a side note, if anybody is in Europe and selling tropical or unusual fruit plants and seed please message me as I could be interested in more.
