With a hoop house or suntuf panels for added winter heat, summer shade cloth , good soil mix and dialed irrigation you can grow Jaboticaba in pots and get big growth and crops on par with Florida, in your Bay area location.
If they have die back your soil needs changed , most likely anerobic. Alternatively they could be getting too much sun .
I am not a believer in potted or planted out full sun Jabo's in CA.

I grow mine in a mix of loam, peat, and sand. They still die back and take forever to grow. I think it has to do with the freshness of the seeds. I agree on the pure peat and perlite mixes in principle, but I can't argue with the results a lot of growers have with those.
