I have bought some mangosteen in an asian store and I want to try germinating seeds, but mangosteens were stored in a refrigerator when i bought them. All mangosteens are like fresh and not rotten: from this I deduce they have not been in the refrigerator for so long.
Do you think I will be successful germinating seeds? Which is the best method?
I have never had any success germinating them before btw :(

If the Mangosteens are imported from Thailand then the seeds are dead since they irradiate the fruit to kill any pests that might spread, I got some seeds from Puerto Rico that are starting to germinate
-
They're not exactly "fresh off the tree" fresh but those are the best looking mangosteens I've ever seen sold in a supermarket. Generally the odds of being able to germinate store bought imported mangosteen are not good. I don't know whether it's because of long-term refrigeration (the seeds inside the fruit are quite vulnerable) or whether it's the irradiation all imported fruit go through. Still, I've had success germinating store-bought lychees that were imported, and surely that goes through everything that mangosteen goes through.
I'd say your chances of being able to grow any plants from those mangosteens are not good, but I do think you have a chance, if you're willing to go to the trouble knowing you will most likely meet in failure.
Another issue, I'm not sure about it, I think the mangosteens for export might be picked just a little underripe to prolong shelf life. Unfortunately that means the seeds are not all the way fully formed and are not as big as they would have been later, so this could be a factor. (I'm really not sure)

Ok thanks, but seeds seem enough developed

I wrapped them in a moist paper towel. What is the best way to germinate them?
All the seeds that I planted directly in the soil have become rotten. Why?
-
They don't seem to like to much moisture for germination.
I would try to germinate them in moist vermiculite, and if ny signs of germination were seen, then transplant it to a pot with a well drained substract.
-
I planted several seeds from store bought mangosteen one month ago, placed them in a plastic bag with moist soil, and put them in a place they wouldn't get too cold at night. None of them germinated. I just checked on it right now.
On the other hand, I didn't have any problem germinating seeds that were not from supermarket bought fruit, so I can tell you mangosteen isn't that hard to germinate. I'm pretty sure it probably has to with freshness. Also make sure to use distilled water because the water coming out from your faucet may have too much chlorine and mangosteen seedlings are sensitive.
-
So do you think moist paper towel method is good to germinate these seeds?
-
Update?

I put some from my own trees in coconut peat with little humedity and they took like 2 weeks to sprout.... Inside a zip log bag...
-
I put mine between damped paper towel, inside a zip lock bag. I zipped the bag 3/4 of the way. 4 seed seems to sprout after 2-3 weeks.
Do you fully zipped the bag?

Yes I fully zipped the bag, didn't want humedity to scape

I used the same method for the market bought(Imported) mangosteen seeds and one of the two germinated.

These are seeds that I directly planted

Mangosteen roots are pretty poor. Are you air pruning their roots?
-
Thanks Seanny,Schutzhund for your seedling photo!
Actually those seeds became rotten, but I have some other fresh seeds bought from ebay sellers waiting to germinate
-
No germination for me. I need to go to local store to buy more Mexican mangosteen. Yours?
-
No germination also for me. I have planted many mangosteen seeds but no one has ever germinated...
-
My seeds still look fresh. Seems to take a long time. Still waiting.
-
Once you've germinated them, they'll grow much faster with an LED grow light, inside a small enclosure to hold the humidity.

It's the irradiation, not the refrigeration that makes the seeds sterile. Depending on dose of irradiation sometimes some seeds can survive.

Mangosteen seeds are not like regular seeds, technically they are actually adventitious embryos, which was why I thought they might be more sensitive to long-term refrigeration.

Depends on what you mean by long term? Months yes, weeks no. Transportation is in the order of weeks.

The biggest seedling and he one in left lower corner are definitely annona squamosa. Very far from being a mangosteen :D
That said, sugar apple is a delicious fruit, i would keep it

After 10 weeks 3 seedling emerge.

I thought the seeds were bad so I bought more seeds. :-[

Thai seeds germinated after 10 days, 100% germination. Bought the fruit in Thailand from a street seller. So it must be the irradiation.

Hey guys! FINALLY I was able to find an Asian Market that had fresh non-irradiated mangosteens here! Seeds are also starting to sprout. Can't wait to see them growing into plants!

What he /\ said, the seeds are likely dead from the irradiation.

Definitely not mangosteen. Yes looks like some type of annona. I guess it could have been worst and they could have sent you lentil seeds. :D, like someone just posted about receiving from Amazon.
