Cold Hardy Citrus / Hi Everyone
« on: December 09, 2020, 07:31:13 PM »
I have been sick for quit a few months. I am very happy to be back. I really missed the forum.  I lost some of my seedlings because I could not get family members to water anything. I'm so glad that everything did not die.

This is how I protect mine.  I am in zone 8a also, about 75 miles south of you.

So far has worked fairly well.  I haven't lost a tree yet, though I have had some minor damage.

TFN were do you get the barrels? Do you fill them with water?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Loquat from seed
« on: December 06, 2019, 10:56:50 AM »
If you graft loquats to a seedling, you will get fruits in 1-2yrs. I have flowers now on my grafted budwoods from early 2019. Since its a nice big scion wood (3/4"diameter) grafted on a large seedling plant, I will let it go to fruit so I can taste it in spring time. I have many loquat trees and the fruits are very tasty.

Cindy, let me know when you get the grafting down and I will send you some different varieties of loquats (orange flesh & white flesh).

Thanks, I will. I just grafted one of my inside citrus plants. Keep your fingers crossed.

If I find this one I will keep it inside during winter. I read that it was one of the best tasting grapefruits out there.

Does anyone know the hardiness of this grapefruit? I know it comes from Puerto Rico but I have not been able to find hardiness.

I see you are in zone 8a. Is this in a greenhouse or planted outside?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Illicium From Seed
« on: November 30, 2019, 02:32:56 PM »
Has anyone grown Illicium (anise) from seed? I have 4 different Illicium but they were bought as blooming plants. I have
Illicium henryi
Illicium Georgia ( This one is a disappointment)
Illicium floridanum
Illicium Alba
I want Illicium Verum but need to grow from seed. How long does it take to grow from seed?

Is this the fruit that was carried in pockets and purses back in the day, to help tone down body odor.

Thanks Bomand. I found this chart https://ucanr.edu/sites/ucceventura/files/57694.pdf . Boy that Eureka is pretty much incompatible with everything. I am using trifoliata and I see it is compatible with most. I want to graft cold hardy lemon and oranges.

If your rootstock is dormant buds will have a hard time taking. If you have a controlled environment I would cleft graft this. You can graft as many shoots as you have scions for. Be sure you are grafting compatables. You do not want a variety that is going to overgrow all the rest of them.
How would you know which are compatible?

Does this apply even if the trees are inside the house?

I will try grafting on these branches as Bommand suggested. I have one scion to graft can anyone send me some more cold hardy scions to graft. I can pay for postage only. I will bring the tree into the sun porch and keep it there until string. How many different scions is OK to graft on 1 tree?

Does anyone grow this pear? I have seen on one site that it is the same as the Maverick Pear. The Maverick pear is the best pear I have ever eaten. Does anyone have scions of this pear for sale?

I referring to the infrared bulb mentioned by lebmung. Will it work on an infrared heat lamp?

You can get a thermo cube from Tractor Supply or a similar thermostatic device for under $15 at Lowe’s. Or online. I plug my heaters into a thermo cube at beginning of winter and let it protect the trees for me while knowing I’m not wasting as much electricity or possibly over heating my trees and causing them to break dormancy. My only labor for the trees after winterizing them is watering at least once a week and opening and closing the door on enclosure to vent when not freezing temps, again to prevent overheating and breaking dormancy.
Will the thermo cube work on a heat lamp?

will2358, I believe my preference would be thermostatic control rather than time control, simply because temperature excesses would have the lamp turn off regardless of time of day, to avoid overheating damage. Likewise very cold temperatures during daytime would turn the lamp on regardless of time of day.
Lack of funds and the fact that it is a plastic cover for 1 plant instead of a greenhouse. I already have the timer and I only need to buy the bulb. Actually when I did have my greenhouse I used a small electric heater on a timer to keep things from freezing. I heated the GH like that for a few years.

Has anyone used Infrared bulbs? The one used to heat the chickens.
The infared bulb sounds like a great idea. I will place my light on a timer.

I can’t find old-fashioned Christmas lights and my POA won’t let us do Christmas lights for half the year anyway. I’ve wondered about propane patio heaters but I don’t think it would be economical nor would the heater last more than a few hours.
What about an halogen bulb shop light? That is what I plan on using, with an outside timer.
