B2B
very nice selection, great prices!
-
what's the best tasting ones in your opinion? I have a small suebelle that I plan on grafting other varieties on in the future.
-
Thanks JF! White Sapote are delicious and I have a lot at the moment I'd like for people to plant out.
Raimeiken,
The favorites I have tasted are Santa Cruz and Cuccio, Walton is highly rated and I know I've tried it but it was mixed with other unlabeled varieties. I have a lot of fruit holding from the other varieties listed that I'm looking forward to trying.
Thank you Bob Chambers ! Rest well.

Can you tell me which one does not bitter taste near the peel, sweet and thick flesh ?
-
Great that you're offering these so more people can grow them. Great prices, $35 for 5gal.
-
Can you send international?
Thank you
-
Dragon, the only bitter skin white Sapote I've eaten was in Florida. I haven't tried all these varieties but noted some favorites earlier in the thread.
Fyliu, thanks a lot . Some trees are easy & faster to grow and should be cheaper I believe since it was less work. I always wonder why Dragonfruit plants are so expensive in nurseries here, im hard pressed to think of an easier plant to grow, much less fruit.

Palolo grower, I only know White Sapote as good compatible rootstock. I don't know if you could graft it on Wooly Sapote or anything else.
Vlan1, No can do on shipping the 5 Gallons. I could send some seeds soon and then scion , they're easy to grow and graft.
-
I have read that C. tetrameria does not make a good rootstock for C. edulis. If I remember correctly it negatively effects fruiting. C. edulis works for C. tetrameria.

I have grafted the wooley white sapote onto suebell.

I have grafted the wooley white sapote onto suebell.
Is that Smathers or a different one? Are there other named C. tetrameria besides 'Smathers'? I have heard that Suebelle is an edulis/tetrameria cross.

White Sapote scion is good to go again.
"Smathers" is the only named C. Tetrameria I have come across. I had 1 successful graft last year onto C. Edulis rootstock and its very cool to see it growing side by side with a C. Edulis branch. I should probably cut the C. Edulis branch off and have 1 singular focused C. Tetrameria graft.
I had not heard that about Suebelle before.

Which are your top three cultivars regarding the taste?
-
Felipe, I have not tried more than 1/2 the varieties on the list so hard to give a top 3. I like all the White Sapote's I've eaten in CA. I say grow as many varieties as possible as they are easy to graft and a delicious fruit.
-
With regard to grafting C. edulis on C. tetrameria or visa versa, there is no incompatibility. I have 15 year old C. tetrameria grafted on C. edulis and the tree produces prolifically normal sized fruit. The tree is about half the size of C. tetrameria on its own roots. C. tetrameria is not a huge tree like C. edulis (about size of a peach tree).
However, grafting C. edulis on C. tetrameria (white sapote on yellow or wooly leaved sapote) leads to extreme dwarfing. I have Pike and Vernon grafted on C. tetrameria rootstock and 15 year old trees are no bigger than 3 ft tall . One is still in 5 gallon pot, other in the ground. Both are same size. Production is limited by size of tree, but normal sized fruit. Each produces 3-5 fruits.
Crfg years ago did a taste test of the yellow sapote (wooly leaved sapote, C. tetrameria) and labeled two as worth propagation. These were identified as #6 and #7. Taste is different than C. edulis, color is yellowish inside, seeds are much smaller. Indeed the underside of the leaves are very fuzzy (wooly), C. edulis is smooth, except Suebelle has a slight fuzz as possible indication of mixed heritage.
-
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge Jack! I was hoping you'd chime in on this .
I'm excited to grow C. Tetrameria now that I have it succesfully grafted on C. Edulis
It's neat to see both types of leaves growing from the same rootstock .

That is great to hear. They can be a bit tricky for me to root in winter. Keep em pretty darn dry!

Just a general question:
What is the best rootstock to use to graft other white sapote varieties?
Is there one in particular that you can use so that they don't grow as big?
I hope I am making sense ... my apologies in advance.
-

You can graft on C. Tetrameria if you can find it. That will dwarf your C. Edulis.

-
Serious plant wizardry!
You have a misting chamber set up?
-
Jonah, yes you can root some white sapote.
I have a few that rooted and have plenty of leaves now so i will be putting it in a separate pot.
Will try to take a few photos of the rooted cutting when I pot it.
-
No misting system just inside a humidity dome with bottom heat. I use sphagnum moss for rooting and an anti fungal rooting hormone
-
I just grow it outside in a pot, in shade under my loquat trees. No special care required.
Also no issue with grafting of C. Tetrameria and C. Edulis, any combination of these.
I have a few seedling trees of the C. Tetrameria but no fruits yet.
-
Very cool, thanks for posting and the pictures.
-
What scions do you have and would recommend? at these from fruiting trees, i have some small seedlings i started would like to try graft 1 or 2.
Growing mine in the caribbean. Cant wait 1-+ for these to fruit lol
-
The varieties that do well in St. maarten may be different from the ones that do good here for me.
I would try a handful of different ones as they flower and fruit quick , and then select your favorites and ones that do best. Not all my varieties are fruiting but they are all bigger tree’s now and are all flowering this spring so I am hoping to have tried fruit from all the varieties I have by the end of the season.

Add “Leroy” cultivar.
-
Any updates on these rooted cuttings? Are they doing alright? I have 5 seedlings that are ready for grafting but I have an opportunity to get scions of more varieties than that, so rooting the ones that won't end up being grafted would be a great way to have more than 5 varieties.
