Prison Cold Hardy Citrus Grove
« on: June 06, 2017, 10:19:25 PM »
Mitchell County Correctional Institute, Georgia has planted the first correctional facility orange grove.   The grove consists of 10 trees each of 10 different more or less cold hardy cultivars.

Changsha Tangerine (Sweet Frost)
Bruce Grapefruit (Pink Frost)
Ichange Lemon (Grand Frost)
Cara Cara Navel
Frost Owari Satsuma
Nules Mandarin
Meyer lemon
Murcot Mandarin
Kieffer Lime
Liquid Gold Grapefruit

All 100 trees are grafted upon trifoliate stock. Some of these varieties I have never heard of.  The trees will be cared for by the inmates, and if all goes well the grove can be expanded.  Micro sprinkles for frost protection and irrigation was also donated for the venture.   Wish them luck.

This is interesting news. I've heard of all of them except for Liquid Gold. Sweet Frost and Grand Frost are the select trees from Dr Wayne Hanna's irradiated citrus trials at University of GA. They were able to reduce the seed counts dramatically from 30 to 2 seeds on average with the changsha and around 55 to less than 6 with the Ichang. The Bruce Grapefruit is a greater than 30 year old red grapefruit tree located in south Georgia that is being propagated because of its hardiness.

Fascinating post. Maybe those varieties will become more popular and more readily available in the future.

I managed to snag  Sweet Frost and Grand Frost plants a few weeks ago thanks to a series of lucky coincidences. The company that bought the rights say that they should have much more next year. Hopefully they can get a good distributor deal worked out.
