What's going on with my Mission fig tree?

Seems like overnight, or maybe a couple days at most, things went from healthy looking to dead. The tree has been in the ground for about 10 years, annual pruning to keep the size in check. As can be seen in the photos, there are 3 main trunks coming up from the ground. The dead/dying one is the rightmost, it's also the largest. There's some brown coloration at the bottom of the trunk, not sure if it's indicative of anything. Since I took the photos a few days ago, I've cut down that trunk to about a foot above the ground. The other 2 trunks seem to be healthy. Thanks for your opinions!

Is there any sign of gophers in the area ? They do love fig roots.

William,
There are ground squirrels occasionally, but not in this part of the yard. It's too close to the house, and dogs are always ready to pounce
