My backyard neighbor has a gigantic 40-70ft mulburry tree with their limbs about 30+feet into my property. All yours if you can  cut it yourself.

Next time I get some tree trimmers mulch I'll keep a few for you if you want.
I'm sure some growers in your area would beable to do the same though.

Turkey tail is the easiest species to find growing wild, in my experience. Before you bother to try growing it, see how much is available in your local woods.

Edzone,

I thought softwoods are best for shroom growing, like birch.  I chopped down all my birch trees that was on my propriety previously.  And I noticed mushroom start coming out from it. So ,  I think birch is a great host for shrooms.

You could also go in a forest and find a dead fallen tree or branch and take it.
Shouldnt be illegal to do so if the log is dead.

Just keep your eyes open while driving around. People are always chopping trees down in my neighborhood.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.

I think hardwood, like oak, is best for growing mushrooms like that.

Do you have a yard recycle waste near you? I can go by and they would let me have any wood pieces before they mulch it.
My name is Cindy

I put a ton of plugs into red oak logs that are on my property... Filled with blue oyster and shiitake. This will be the first year they sprout, or not.

This stuff is very common around in CA, and I'm sure there are oaks somewhere near you. Apparently the spores don't care much what wood you use - a softwood will just deteriorate faster so you'll get fewer years / smaller yields.

Theres a much better way. Firstly, new wood is still living, alot of mushroom growers plug them and the spawn are still alive in the dowels while the tree dies. Then its so dense it can take a year to colonize the log.

If you get wood already dead, it may already have several fungi and molds. Then you have island colonies and you wont get the return you want.

Go buy some wood stove pellets.. 40 pounds for dollars.  Mix water with it, break it down into mush.. put it in some ziplock bags. (with some airholes melted in, covered with paper medical tape)  then steam the bag for a couple hours.. then put your Turkey tail spawn in.  when the whole bag is colonized.. cut it open.

It's a fun project, but alot goes into it.
Fungi is weird..the more effort you put into it the more that can go wrong.. but the return is unlike any vegetable.

Perfectly balanced, some wood loving species can grow 20 percent of the substrate weight in fruit. I mean if you cN image 20 percent of an oak trees weight in mushrooms.. it's quite amazing.

But that requires, sterile procedures, perfect mixes, growing rooms, clean growing rooms.

We spend our lives trying inhibits molds from growing. So it takes a little getting used to.

There are Mid Range ways to grow fungi too. That aren't so lavor intensive or prone to failure. Strawbale growing looks really good. Strawbag is really messy, but a little more forgiving.

Personally, I found some baby chanterelles this year. If I find them again I'm going to make a slurry with the fruit. Chanterelles are mycorhizal meaning they need a living tree for symbiosis. slurries are 5 gallons buckets with a sweetener, toss in a few fresh mushrooms and you've made 5 gallons of inoculate. To splash around tree roots. Morels, are like this, so are the famous red cap hallucinogens.

But keep in mind some fungi are straight up parasitic. Chicken of the woods, honey.. they will kill trees. Something to keep in mind when you grow trees
