Wampee vs Pink Wampee Taste?
« on: July 06, 2017, 10:07:48 PM »
Has anyone tried both Clausena lansium (wampee) and Clausena excavata (pink wampee)? I'd like to propagate one or both species, but was wondering of one is preferred over the other. From what I've read, it looks like a worthy yet underrated fruit. :)
If anyone has suggeestions/growing tips, please post them!

Also, does anyone know if pink wampee leaves smell a bit like curry leaves?  They're related so I guess there's a chance.  I have a plant that I'd labeled as pink wampee, but I wasn't 100% sure because it smelled a bit like curry leaf.

The pink wampee is best used like curry leaf. The fruits are tiny and not good tasting.

i have a Wampee from a seller on Ebay
it was called "Chicken Tongue" or something like that.
i cant find a graft, so i am hoping its from cuttings or air-layer.

i also just got a pink one.
i have no idea if this is from seed or not,
but thee was no variety info on it.

My thought was that the variety would tste better than seed-grown
(if indeed the pink is from seed)
The Chicken tongue is in ground and growing nicely.
it appreciated some iron and epsom. the leaves greened up a bit.
i plan on putting the pink in ground next to it and maybe grafting another variety to it, or topworking
depending on taste and quality.

i like the idea that its citrus related.
all of my citrus has been mercilessly attacked by leaf miners
some, also by mealy bug and others by chinese psyllid.

the wampees have no damage whatsoever. no pest has ever attacked them that i know of.

I don't have a picture of my tree, but looking at pictures online and from what you all describe, I'm pretty sure it is a real pink wampee.  It's too bad it's not great as a fruit, but that's very interesting that it can be used like curry leaf!

I think it's a case of common name leading to confusion. Clausena excavata is called pink "wampee", but it is a different species than regular wampee, which is Clausena lansium. And these 2 species have very different tasting and sized fruits.

Thanks all for all of the responses so far. They were helpful in increasing my understanding of these two species. I am interested in growing the regular wampee (Clausena lansium). I don't have a seed source though.:/ So far , I have only found a few sources for the pink type. I have curry tree already and don't really need another tree with curry scented leaves, and "meh" fruits. There is a listing for the regular type on eBay. But I am a bit wary of eBay plant sales, and would rather propagate it by seed my self. :)

Do wampee grow true or pretty close to the same quality from seed?

What is the cold tolerance of punk wampee? Similar to wampee?
