I have 8 trees. 6 in full sun and two in half shade. The ones in full sun fruit months earlier, set more fruit and produce pleasant but unimpressive fruit even when thinned. They were done 3 months ago. The shaded ones weren't ready until the others were completely gone and continue till now. The fruit from the shaded are fewer but excellent, richer, sweeter, everything. Taste like a tropical version of strawberry with a hint of cloves at the end. GIve it a shot.

Shane, is it lemon guava? It seems to be the same as my lemon guava. Your fruits were super big, juicy and sweet, really delicious.

My lemon guava is in partial shade. They are much smaller than yours. The early reopening ones were so so, but the last ones from Dec were pretty good. It seems a good idea to thin the early fruits for lemon guava?

For citrus with lots of branches, it seems to me that it often takes forever for buds to push. Cleft worked better for me

Kaz, in my experience when the vine isn’t ready it won’t hold any fruits no matter how well you hand pollinate them. Happened to me the first year. No fruits despite hand pollination. Then second year it worked totally fine

I have some great news (at least for me). I just started collecting figs this year after reading Simon's post and suggestions for fig sellers.

After collecting maybe 40+ different varieties, I just noticed this weekend that I have a spot with many new variety seedling trees. The fig trees are over 20-40 yrs old and some are very large trees. I just checked it out and found a few very good tasting figs in the bunch. Will wait until next spring to checkout/taste all of the fig varieties. I may need to come up with some good names for the excellent tasting ones. Here's one red flesh fig I liked and so took a few photos.

Kaz, congrats on finding a good seedling fig. Do you know if it’s common? Looks like your figs are caprified. May be a good idea to give some cuttings out for people to test out.

The bud graft is pushing about 5 tiny leaves now

I highly doubt it. Mulberry is not even close to Yangmei.

Brad, thanks for the feedback on the lychees. I guess I will need to also graft the Kaimana on my tree. I'm slowly top working my Brewster tree, I have the Sweetheart grafts on it and NMZ so I will now add the Kaimana.

Kaz, Kaimana is pretty good and very sweet, but I liked your Brewster better, more fragrant and flavorful. The main thing is that kaimana fruits are larger and seeds are smaller. If your Brewster produces mostly chicken tongue seeds, it’s hard to beat IMO

I'd be in line for a second buy too, Ken - since I jumped on board too late to take part in the Norcal relay that would've gotten my plants up here a few months back. I'd likely be up for purchasing at least one each of the 4 varieties made available last time. Keep us posted if you're willing - I may be able to be the relay guy for the North Central Coast growers who are interested - especially if Nate is busy on the farm next time around.

Import is a pain in the butt and the worst case is total loss (USDA can destroy all trees if they find something they don’t like). That being said, I’m thinking about a second one in the winter - it looks like I may not have a tree surviving myself this time…
