Yes Biao, I think myrica was used in the import docs. Good luck!

Wow Kaz I’m impressed by your collection of citrus. Very nice review and pics.

I only have a small in-ground golden nugget mandarin with sumo and Xie Shan grafted on it. I’m glad that I grafted Xie shan. Perhaps it will fruit this year.

Interesting Kaz. Please share your favorites if possible

Nectarines are one of my favorite fruits, so I’ve trialed everything low chill over the years.  I hand remove the blossoms and the fruits are clean, but I imagine that would be way too time consuming for you.  If you want to try Maria’s Gold let me know, it doesn’t look like any other nectarine and blooms later and I don’t think it has a russeting issue, it’s really good.  Interesting that Flavor King doesn’t bloom well for you, I would think you had more winter chill than me.  I wonder if it’s because you get hot days in the spring?  I have a low chill, self fertile cherry from Spain, Cristobalina, if you want to try it.  Tree is still small but I can share a scion with you.  I definitely want to try some of the new low chill trees from Dave Wilson when they’re available.  I don’t remember which one, but I think they described one of the new low chill nectarines as no russeting.

Have you heard of the Adara plum?  There is research on it being used as a rootstock and interstem for cherry trees and other stone fruits because it handles alkaline soil conditions.  Plum is the easiest tree in my yard, so I’m going to experiment with using it as an interstem for apricot and peach/ nectarine as well.  Some of the most widely used rootstock for stone fruits, especially cherry, don’t do well in my heavy clay and alkaline soil.

Janet I have some Adara plum scions to share if you need them. I didn’t graft cherry on them but have grafted other stone fruits and they were easy to take.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yellow strawberry guava: sun vs shade
« on: December 18, 2021, 09:59:34 PM »
I have 8 trees. 6 in full sun and two in half shade. The ones in full sun fruit months earlier, set more fruit and produce pleasant but unimpressive fruit even when thinned. They were done 3 months ago. The shaded ones weren't ready until the others were completely gone and continue till now. The fruit from the shaded are fewer but excellent, richer, sweeter, everything. Taste like a tropical version of strawberry with a hint of cloves at the end. GIve it a shot.

Shane, is it lemon guava? It seems to be the same as my lemon guava. Your fruits were super big, juicy and sweet, really delicious.

My lemon guava is in partial shade. They are much smaller than yours. The early reopening ones were so so, but the last ones from Dec were pretty good. It seems a good idea to thin the early fruits for lemon guava?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Import lychee trees from China?

Last time I checked earlier 2021, lychee trees are no longer allowed to be imported. You may want to call APHIS to check if there’s any update

Hi Bill, thanks for putting this together and keep the cost low! This is the best time for bareroot import. Good luck!

Beicadad, thank you for the supporting and all the effort you put for the previous group order.
Can you share the previous order's exporter info with me? I am talking with a couple of exporters in China, and will pick up
a most reliable one. You can send the info to me by email biaozhang@hotmail.com. Thanks, biao

Just sent you an email Bill.

For citrus with lots of branches, it seems to me that it often takes forever for buds to push. Cleft worked better for me

Janet, wow your fruits looks big already. I hope I get one flower to set fruit. I just pollinated 2 more today and I saw another 5 that might open by next week. When I looked at my flowers closer it looks like it doesn't have any pollen on the pedals so maybe that's my problem. It may need another year before my flowers have pollen. I just used my purple passion flower pollen since the PD didn't seem to have any in the flowers.

Kaz when in the day did you check for the pollen? I think it's possible that PF flowers form pollens later in the day.

Kaz, in my experience when the vine isn’t ready it won’t hold any fruits no matter how well you hand pollinate them. Happened to me the first year. No fruits despite hand pollination. Then second year it worked totally fine

Hoang’s PD doesn’t need pollens from another variety - using the pollens from the same flower works well. In fact, Hoang said pollens from regular passion fruits (that flower opens upward) wouldn’t work.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting fig for SoCal?
« on: September 05, 2021, 01:25:36 AM »
I have some great news (at least for me). I just started collecting figs this year after reading Simon's post and suggestions for fig sellers.

After collecting maybe 40+ different varieties, I just noticed this weekend that I have a spot with many new variety seedling trees. The fig trees are over 20-40 yrs old and some are very large trees. I just checked it out and found a few very good tasting figs in the bunch. Will wait until next spring to checkout/taste all of the fig varieties. I may need to come up with some good names for the excellent tasting ones. Here's one red flesh fig I liked and so took a few photos.

Kaz, congrats on finding a good seedling fig. Do you know if it’s common? Looks like your figs are caprified. May be a good idea to give some cuttings out for people to test out.

68
I ordered an extra pack and it has about 18 small plants (6-pack but each has more than one plants) that I don’t need. If anyone needs them please let me know.

69
The bud graft is pushing about 5 tiny leaves now

Simon

Wow Simon, this is incredible. Very nice job!

70
Simon you’ve made remarkable progresses! Both the bud and the approach grafts look very promising

71
I have a lot of mulberry trees, I hope that's true. Maybe I will try it next year if I have some branches on the An Hai.

I highly doubt it. Mulberry is not even close to Yangmei.

72

I got some cuttings from Shane and this one seems to have flower buds form on the top already. According to the article by Yunfei Yangmei forms flower buds in summer/fall and I think this is what I’m seeing.

Only the buds on the top look like this. The other buds below looks just like regular vegetative ones.

Brad, thanks for the feedback on the lychees. I guess I will need to also graft the Kaimana on my tree. I'm slowly top working my Brewster tree, I have the Sweetheart grafts on it and NMZ so I will now add the Kaimana.

Kaz, Kaimana is pretty good and very sweet, but I liked your Brewster better, more fragrant and flavorful. The main thing is that kaimana fruits are larger and seeds are smaller. If your Brewster produces mostly chicken tongue seeds, it’s hard to beat IMO

74
Ken, that's terrible if you end up with no surviving plant after all this work you did for everyone and you ending up with none.
I have my 2 An Hai plants that are growing well, if you end up with none making it then I will give you one of my plants.

The reason I purchased these last call rootstock was after reading about all the work you did, and then you ending up with some extra plants because people who committed to buy backed out on you.

Kaz, it’s very kind of you! I’m still not giving it up yet on my remaining An Hai. Also, it seems that nobody is successful with dongkui and black peak this time.

75
I'd be in line for a second buy too, Ken - since I jumped on board too late to take part in the Norcal relay that would've gotten my plants up here a few months back. I'd likely be up for purchasing at least one each of the 4 varieties made available last time. Keep us posted if you're willing - I may be able to be the relay guy for the North Central Coast growers who are interested - especially if Nate is busy on the farm next time around.

Sorry for the late response. I’ve not been checking the forum very often.

Import is a pain in the butt and the worst case is total loss (USDA can destroy all trees if they find something they don’t like). That being said, I’m thinking about a second one in the winter - it looks like I may not have a tree surviving myself this time…
