Title: Mamey Sapote seed viability
Post by: Mvule101 on October 12, 2019, 01:17:44 PM
Just wondering how long Mamey Sapote seeds remain viable for as all my efforts to get viable seeds, here in Uganda, have not worked out.

Are they better shipped moist?

Any suggestions appreciated!

I would think moist would be better. I planted a seed soon after consuming the fruit (I believe it was a day or so after eating the fruit) and it did sprout within a month. Perhaps whoever sources your seeds could put some in moist vermiculite? Good luck!

I got around 10 mature trees, but still in pots. Hopefully they will be transplanted to Gayaza next July... Stay tuned :-)

I have also tried to germinate seeds a few times, they never germinated. Tried them cracked, uncracked in peat moss, soil ,moist towel method, nada. I think around here they get shipped or stored in too cold of a temp and the seed inside the fruit dies, or they get irradiated or something. I have heard u have to sow them immediately after u take em out of the fruit.....

Interesting, every seed of sapote mamey i purchased for eating germinated. they die in the winter here anyway. I have a one now that survived our 32f with a bucket i put over it at night.
