I think the plant is Diospyros ferrea
http://www.natureloveyou.sg/Diospyros%20ferrea/Main.html
The fruits are very much edible by human beings and taste is sweet and sour
Previously I thought to be Atalantia racemosa

The collector first said it to be Atalantia racemosa.
He gave these local names(Kannada):Madkey hannu/Emme pukli hannu/Puchey hannu/Dragen eye(These names I did not find on the web)
Now he says it is Diospyros ferrea
Each fruit has 2 seeds

Is it Diospyros ferrea?
I actually came to this thread to reccomend Diospyros ferrea, but I believe you are correct on the identification.
Also, leaves and peduncles are akin to that of a D. virginiana.

Compound leaves, so not a Diospyros.
Probably is in the Sapindaceae, related to Longans and Lychees, as indicated by the common name given: "Dragon-Eye".
