pretty sure it's self pollinating...

i tried hand pollination, and failed every time.

the only flowers that set fruits were the ones I left alone.

I killed mine, so I hope you get it to set fruit! I beat you to flowering but you ultimately won Adam :'(

the battle is nowhere near finished!

but rest assured...if I win, you win!

seeds and mature scions will be available.
(scions will be available for sure next next winter)

I have this species grafted onto A. reticulata (grafted by Bob407 as an experiment)
so far it looks really promising.

I tried that a couple times to no avail. But my tree wasn't healthy. So wait, did this require a a second plant or did it self pollinate?

Adam,
humidity was high while fruit setting? Flower was in shadow or partial sunlight?

Adam,

100% full sunlight, no interruptions (besides the shade that was provided by the foliage of the plant itself).

humidity was not what I would call high..we've been having almost zero rain for the month of May...it's really frustrating..lots of hot dry weather.

but I think some plants are loving it...especially my figs!

dioica doesn't seem to mind...i know wet feet can kill this plant (I believe that's what happened to Miguel's plant in Portugal.)

Many thanks for useful info!

You mentioned (and posted images) earlier in this thread about yours another Annona sp with small glabrous leaves. How it doing? Any ideas about its ID? Maybe some new images?   ;)

yes thanks for reminding me!

I believe this is just seedling variation amongst A. dioica!

they all turned out to be the same, they all have fuzzy leaves now.

I suppose during their juvenile stages of development, the leaves can be more variable?

Yes, we know it is normal.

Do you remember as yours A. dioica was sprouted? As regular Annonas, lifting seeds under the soil, or as A. senegalensis and A. cornifolia (seeds stay in soil)?

Wery well! This explains significant similarity with A. senegalensis, especially its South African variety.
Probably it can be crossed with A. cornifolia and A. senegalensis.  :o

I hadn't heard or noticed this grouping by germination habit--- good observation!

the new book "Frutas No Brasil" has some great new pics and info about A. dioica.

So far this species has been very easy to grow, I just hope it starts to set some fruits...I got flowers last year on my two seedlings (now in 25 gal pots), and it looked like fruit set, but they refused to grow, and after a few months of staying green, they dropped off.

still early in the game, it was the first year they had a good bloom...

I think this Annona has potential for container growers, and rare fruit collectors.

Hey, Adam
I just got my first blooms this week. My still potted A. Dioica is from you and maybe the same age as yours (about 4 yrs?). Did you get any blooms this year?

Also, I only have the one so it will be interesting to see if I get anything from my blooms even if they abort. Let me know when/if you have scions available and I'll look to grafting. How sucessful and what type of graft have you used on this species?

Lastly, do you of anyone who has tasted the fruit.? I can find very little literature on this plant out there!

I grafted it onto Cherimoya and got it too large size in a 25 gallon before giving away to a friend in San Diego. Would like to try growing again. Probably needs hand pollination like alot of Annona’s.
