Anyone heard of this rare sp.
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:45:27 PM »
Hi all, found this odd Annona specimen while surfing the net, it is supposed to be Annona edulis, it looks like a mini cherimoya in one picture, strange... anyone have info about this species? No flowers, foliage looks very pretty, is it worth growing(that is if anyone can find seeds)?

Looks terrible. Unless you like a mouth full of moist seeds for breakfast?

Yea and there isn't much special about it, unlike Annona cornifolia which has a blazing red color.  8)

Look at this description of A. emarginata(which I believe is actually Rollinia emarginata),

Almost all the rollinias are like that, except for deliciosa, they are small and very seedy.
If you look at the scale on those photos of Annona edulis you will see fruit is less than 2 inches across, seeds are almost 1/2 inch, so yes, a mouthfull of seeds.

Oh... looks like a good one for annona addicts like me who collect annona's out of obsession and rarity rather than flavor/ foliage, etc.

Flavor might be good, even perhaps very good. Who knows? But size is also a consideration. Nice thing about fruits is that their size is not written in stone, it can be changed through selection, hybridization, etc.

You can find the full size photographs shown above by Jackson here. Here is another good photo:

After some difficulty, I successfully germinated three seeds of Rollinia edulis. My eldest seedling:

The pot:

The seeds were very large with a smooth but not polished testa, similar to those of A. cherimola in size and coloration, yet the shape was triangular with a slightly more conspicuous caruncle.
I am curious as to where they fit into Safford's subdivisions.

No Rollinia emarginata on TopTrpicals photos! It's really Rollinia maritima (Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay).

What shape your Rollinia edulis seeds was? It was triangular?
I germinated two very similar Patrick's description (but not big, 1.0-1.3cm). Bought on TradeWinds?

Personally, I'm tired of writing: neosalicifolia, neosericea, neolaurifilia, neoinsignis...
For practical growing and proper identification is easier to use the old names Rollinia genus.

Yes,

They do fit the seed description but the leaves are different.

I agree with Alex.  I ignore the lumping of Rollinia into Annona.

Never had a anonna species in my collection, but I just got a rollinia deliciosa tree. How would you experts describe this fruit/tree?

Personally, I'm tired of writing: neosalicifolia, neosericea, neolaurifilia, neoinsignis...

You're forgetting Annona neoamazonica, neochrysocarpa, neoecuadorensis, neoelliptica, neoulei, and neovelutina. ;) I have to agree that it is easier to ignore the merging of Rollinia into Annona.

I thought I should mention that before Rollinia edulis became Annona edulis this species had two varieties: Rollinia edulis var. acuta & Rollinia edulis var. macropus. The differences in fruit and leaf shape ended up not being enough to distiguish them as seperate subtaxon.

Jack's original photos from the Field Meuseum show R. edulis var. macropus, while the photos from Rare Palm Seeds appear to display R. e. acuta.

Rollinia edulis var. macropus:

I would say my seedlings are var. acuta, but of course, I am judging off of immature leaves, really only time will tell.

Thanks Patrick!
Never heard about R. edulis varieties.
Rollinia edulis var. acuta looks like Rollinia deliciosa wild progenitor...
