Tropical Fruit Discussion / Removing marginal plants
« on: October 04, 2014, 05:16:20 PM »
Like many space is very valuable to me so I am starting to go through and take out plants that do not give me a good return for the space they take.
Today I removed my Solanum robustum.
Plus side it is a very fast grower. It reashed 15 feet tall in two years from 1 gallon pot. It has had many blooms and a few flowers. I may have needed a second one for better fruit set.
Minus side it has rose like thorns on all branches. The thorns also are on the back of all the leaves. All the thorns are back barded and very sharp. The fruit are smaller than a golf ball and are a nice yellow skin when ripe. To me the taste was OK but not great, but my wife did not like them.
The space will now go to three Grewia asiatica.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulch
« on: October 18, 2013, 01:39:39 PM »
I have a stand of Bambo Greenstripe Vivax  (Bright yellow with green stripes, large leaves, tall and fast-growing, cold-hardy)
Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' that is just now gotten big enough to produce large quanities of leaves.
I started using them in several planting beds and in a number of pots with tropical fruit trees as mulch/weed control. So far they are doing a great job of both.
Does anyone been using then and what should I be concerned about?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Phyllanthus emblica (Amla Fruit)
« on: June 19, 2013, 05:31:15 PM »
The other name I see used with this is the Indian Gooseberry. I had someone talk to me about it the other day so I started looking at it. It is suppose to be very sour which at one time would have made me stay away from it. But Adam has me hooked on Miracle Berries sour fruits.
Is anyone growing this and is it worth growing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ambarella (Spondias dulcis)
« on: May 19, 2013, 12:45:28 PM »
I was given a gallon pot with a Ambarella tree in it. I am having trouble finding much information about it. Is anyone growing it and what can you tell me about the quality of the fruit and how to grow it. What I can find so far is that it does not like full sun so I will put it in a partially shaded area. I am putting it in a larger pot for now.
