Barbados Cherry and Pomegranate Tree Stability
« on: June 21, 2019, 06:00:43 PM »
I have one barbados cherry and two pomegranate trees that are leaners. Would propping them up with stakes and reducing/limiting water force them to establish a stronger root system so they can support themselves eventually?

T-post and tree-o-mate support work wonder shaping trees. My Barbados after planting with and without support.

I have the same issue with one of my pomegranate trees. I'm afraid to try anything right now because it
has 2 fruit growing on it. My other 2 pom. trees are growing up straight so far.

Barbados cherry is a quick grower. Pruning them back should help develop a stronger trunk and be more stable. They also respond well to pruning, usually by flushing and flowering.
Personally, instead of a standard tree form I prefer a low branching vase form.

I have a similar set-up, but using just a regular 8ft green stake and green garden tie-tape. Im just wondering because i've heard that supporting a weak tree doesn't encourage a strong root system in the long run.

Tree-O-Mate keeps the tree straight with an EPDM band and encourages to grow thicker trunk. Also rootball is not disturbed during heavy wind unlike when tree is staked.
