Anyone have durian seeds available now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some of my fruit
« on: August 09, 2014, 09:52:12 AM »
The drought this year has taken its toll:
Gamboge on mangosteens

Pulasans are ripening but not much flesh on them- all seed and skin

Jackfruit has some disease- causing splitting, probably Anthracnose

But not all bad news-
The dragonfruit likes it!

and the Soncoya too!  I was hoping these would be ripe in the next 9 days, but I don't think that will be the case :-(
But interesting thing- I hand pollinated them in the morning, using the pollen from the flowers that were on the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Candy and other exotic treats
« on: July 06, 2014, 09:17:05 AM »
Has anyone tried any that are any good?
My friend just sent me some durian snacks and Lychee "pop rocks".  Neither had real fruit in them, but the durian had powdered durian flavor and it had the scent  of durian.  It also gave me the usual durian scented returns (burps) afterwards.
The Lycheee pop rocks were fun as expected, but i couldn't say they had any lychee flavor to them.

Any suggestions for what to do with the jackfruit flavoring?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Processing cashews
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:13:34 AM »
So I am trying my hand at doing something with the cashews I am growing.

I juiced the fresh fruit.   It makes a nice tasting juice- better than biting into the fruit! Added a little water and a pinch of sugar and it is good.

After a little research, I decided that roasting the nut is too risky for inside and I don't have a firepit.  (Maybe doing it on a gas grill might work next time?)  I decided to boil the oil out of them.  That is where I am now.  I am giving them 30 mins of boil.  Then I will let them dry in the sun for a few days and try to crack them with a hammer.

Any other suggestions for this time or next time?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guess why I am so happy today...
« on: May 11, 2014, 11:26:27 AM »
Our mangosteen has finally thrown flower buds!   Tree is  6.5 years in the ground and probably was about 3 years old when I got it.  This happy event  has been a long time coming!  I counted about 7 buds this morning...hoping for more but don't want to seem ungrateful!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pulasan Flowering
« on: April 05, 2014, 04:08:22 PM »
After only a few years, 3 of the 4  Pulasan seedlings  are blooming!  I am very excited.  These were from Juan in PR, but not from his "good" tree. I am guessing they are 3 years in the ground, maybe a year seedling when planted.
A first for me, I am hoping at least a couple set fruit.  If not, I will quickly prune them back to encourage more growth.

And while I was in the yard with a camera, a picture of the jackfruit.  Seedling of Black Gold.  I enjoy this one very much.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangosteen growth
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:59:40 AM »
I am not sure if this has been posted or discussed before :
http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/archive/new-technique-cuts-mangosteen-growing-time/
Planting multiple plants together to make stronger roots.

I haven't seen any other studies about this technique, but it might be worth a try.
I have a few freshly sprouted seedlings that I will stick together in one pot and hope for the best.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Poshte- experience hand pollinating?
« on: July 25, 2013, 06:34:24 PM »
My Poshte  is making flowers this year.....
I did a search and found a few members that had them and said the  pollen  collection time will be short.
Anyone have pictures of what a receptive female stage is and ideas of when to try to get pollen?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kwai Muk flowers
« on: July 14, 2013, 07:38:11 PM »
My seedling Kwai Muk has started flowering.  Some are little round balls, some look a bit more elongated.
Is there a way to know which are male and female? Do they look different?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Fruit" ID

I have a friend who has a tree with these "guineos de la India".  He posted them on Facebook.  Anyone have any idea what they are and if they are edible?  They are growing in Puerto Rico.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A few firsts for my yard
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:54:15 AM »
Cashew from seed.  It has flowered for the last 3 years but this is the first time for fruit.

Black Gold jackfruit...also from seed.  First year fruit has developed (lots of male flowers previous years).

One question on the jackfruit....since it is from seed, the tree is tall.  I topped it 2 years ago but it shot up  20 feet in a few months.  Now that fruit is developing, can I top it or should I wait until the fruit is ripe?

Gotta love Spring!  Other things happening:
pineapples are getting ripe.  I have 4 raised beds and have about 40 fruits coming along.
Pitangatuba  and Grumichamas are coming along in fruit.
The Soncoya is just breaking dormancy and the flowers will start opening very soon- time to get ready to pollinate.
Vanilla orchid is in flower, but flowers are too high up to pollinate this year.  Still drying last year's beans.
The grapefruit is all in flower....the yard smells wonderful!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bagging fruit from birds tropical climate
« on: March 14, 2013, 02:45:26 PM »
The birds have finally annoyed me enough to start wanting to bag my fruit.  They only seem to pick at the fruit I want to eat!
I have read about using plastic ziplock baggies with the corners cut off and also using some kind of wax paper.  I don't care  about keeping pests off (not so much of an issue here) and we don't have squirrels and strangely enough the rats don't bother the fruit.  Just the birds.  Any suggestions for best bagging method for a hot humid environment?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soncoya!
« on: September 29, 2012, 12:38:35 PM »
Finally, one of my soncoya fruits has ripened.  I noticed I could see the orange inside at the stem part, like it was loosening from the tree.   I didn't want it to drop onto the ground later, so I picked it.  It is still hardish, but it gives a little more than it did last week.
I read I need to let it ripen a few days after picking....is this true?

I will post inside fruit pictures when I cut it open.  I am very excited to taste this one, it will be my first.  And it was a long time coming!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New grafted mangosteen
« on: August 26, 2012, 12:12:51 PM »
So I am finally getting some time to play in the yard and start planting some of the many trees I bought on the last fruit hunting exhibition.

Today I started with the grafted mangosteen.  $25 was too good a deal to pass up.  Jay and I bought them, but Jay's meet a very unhappy Postal worker on the way to his house.  Since the ones I have seen grown here remain very small and bushy, I decided to plant it closer to house (not in the garcinia area of the yard).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting locations
« on: August 22, 2012, 07:20:49 AM »
I have some new trees to put in and want some opinions.
Is there any advantage in grouping similar types or even families close to each other?

I have a new mangosteen and another garcinia- is it better to put them close to the other mangosteens and garcinias that I am growing for possible increase in pollination?
What about the mangos- better closer to other mangos?

I assume yes, but then a friend suggested to make separate groupings in case something infests one group, some may be safe elsewhere.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some stuff in my yard
« on: August 20, 2012, 05:19:02 PM »
Here are some pictures of my fruit trees in action:

These are Soncoya-  you guys told me to hand pollinate it, so I did and I have 2 fruit coming along nicely.  Noel said they will turn color when ripe.  What exactly should I be looking for in terms of ripe color and texture (able to squeeze it)?

This is the garcnia sp?? (not achachairu)  it was labeled by Sadhu as Bakupari.  Needs to get to be almost orangey to be sweet/ripe- correct?

 Eugenia candolleana in flower

Dragonfruit.  Seems only ones we hand pollinate make fruit.  This one is  the large white Vietnamese ones.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My newest additions
« on: August 01, 2012, 05:39:30 PM »
Earlier this year, as part of a trade,  I received from Florida some new trees.  USPS Priority mail took 8 days to get here, but due to the excellent packing (no easy feat since these were good sized trees!), they all did fine.
A Bradenton Loquat- already in flower!

And because I refuse to accept mangos don't like living in a rain forest, I got 5 beauties:
Coconut cream on left, Lemon Zest on right

Carrie on left, Pickering on right

The Lancetilla was a little touch and go, but now it is happy.

Anyone have it to sale/trade or know where to get it?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Raspberries in the tropics
« on: June 20, 2012, 04:41:35 PM »
I love raspberries and assumed I wouldn't be able to grow them here.   But found this guy a at the San Sebastian market (a little north/east from Maricao) selling all sorts of "northern" fruits that he said fruit here.  I have no idea of the variety, but this is its second fruiting this year.  Next time I am out that way, I will pick up a few other things from him!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need garcinia ID
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:36:58 AM »
I got this seedling from Sadhu at Govardhan Gardens as a Bakupari about 6 years ago.  I got one fruit from it last year, which I snarfed down with taking a picture.  But it was round, golden, about ping pong ball size.  Sweet, similar to a mangosteen, but just a bit more tart.
It is just putting out new leaves and starting to flower. Definitely not an intermedia (I have one of those also, different growth pattern/fruit size/taste).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soncoya
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:52:03 AM »
Hoping for some fruit this year.  Quite a few bloom buds.  The tree seems to make the buds in the fall and then they sit all winter. Like all the annonas,  they are just now shedding their leaves, and then the buds will open. I guess this is normal, since it happened 2 years in a row.  It is just a long wait to see those flowers!
Flowers look like soursop flowers, except they are pink.
