My Alano Sapodilla first bloom?! Please be so!
« on: April 12, 2018, 06:15:40 PM »
I’ve had my Alano Sapodilla for a little over  3 years, I had it in ground for 1 1/2 year then dug it out , pugged, and put in a container when I moved. It’s never flowered or beared fruit for the obvious reasons, but could this finally be?! I love this little tree so much, is it showing me some love?? I hope so!! We’ve been through a lot together! LoL

Any Alano owners know when they typically flower?, Ive read they can possibly flower throughout the year. Thanks!

I have 4 different types besides alano and they are all flowering now.
It won't be long and you'll be eating your first fruit
Good looking tree for what it's been through. Why the double pot?
If you can't put it in the ground I would put it in the bigger pot?
It seems like allot of tree for that smaller pot?

I can’t wait to taste!! Its just in 1 container- It’s not what it looks like, it’s just the top ring of the old container , I couldn’t cut the top off it was to thick for my scissors. It’s currently in a 45gal

Alona is my fastest grower. It blooms year round but fruits start to ripen in June or July and it goes on till November. Silas Wood and Makok are both heavy producers

Thanks for the info guys, if Alano blooms year round would that mean it would fruit all year round? Sorry I’m a bit confused   ???

I also have one Alano sapodilla in the ground now.  Hopefully it'll be productive in a few years.

I ate a makok last week and have a silas wood on the counter.
Both trees have large and small fruit on them and they are flowering profusely.
The only thing that slows my trees down is cold weather. It does seem like
they flower heavier in the spring. Last year I had 100 small fruit on my makok
and I cut off 4 for ever one I left. It just keeps on flowering!

not necessarily Alex. I’m in SoCal so it takes a long time for the fruits to size up and most of the bloom dry up in winter.....it could be posible in Miami. Here in SoCal  it fruits in the mildest areas so if you live in The Valley or inland empire  it may be years or you may never see fruits. I’m looking into introducing several exclusively winter varieties from the Yucatán we will have to wait and see.

CA Hockey: I have no idea of the rootstock these are nursery bought 3 gallon

Ok , would Makok be a good complementary variety to my Alano to have year round fruit? Or any other winter variety ?

If you like lots of smaller fruit yes, I prefer Silas wood they are small fruits but the tree is dwarfish

I hope you like the fruit?
Not everyone does.
If you are like me then you will end up with both the makok and silas wood.
And the Haysa and the morena....
If you can only get one tree, try to sample the fruit. I like the makok the best.
My two Silas wood are growing better though and eventually will have more fruit

The Yucatan types sounds really interesting, I can't wait for a report on their
taste and performance

Alex, we’re in the same neighborhood, probably similar soil and weather conditions. My alano is in full bloom right now, but does often get a second or third bloom. Fruit stay on the tree a long time, and my tree is quite mature. That said, I only have a month or two out of the year where there is either no bloom or no fruit.

Great tasting, super sweet, grainy, small sized fruit.

Great feedback guys, I’ve tried saps many times, just never really asked what variety- I haven’t tasted one I haven’t liked that’s for sure -  that being said - I would like to try Silas wood and Makok before buying. Great to hear Alano fruits most of the year Keith!  how long do you guys think I can keep my Alano in a 45gal - I just upped it from 25gal.

Not far from you guys and mine blooms and fruits almost year round ...slows down a bit in the winter...but generally a tree that's always doing something...fruiting (various stages), ripe fruit, flowering, flushing....
always longing for a JA Julie

Damn, one of the greenest thumb in CA!  ;D ;D

OP: my saps flower annually, for about 5 years now, not a single fruit. Hopefully JF will release soon the varieties that can fruit in the colder areas.
