Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bud Grafting/Epicotyl Grafting Durian
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:50:29 PM »
Anyone ever done it? I have a few hundred durian that I'm going to attempt these two methods on... leaning more towards bud grafting as durian seeds stock is limited in Hawaii...I don't want to kill any of my rootstock through my grafting attempts. I'll keep this thread alive over the next few months with my attempts

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ACKEE Bumper Crop !
« on: September 26, 2013, 10:29:55 PM »
My friends got 2 ackee trees... they seem to fruit twice a year... but one is just going berzerk.. totally loaded.. He is old and cant climb the trees to get them, so he lets me keep half of whatever I harvest ;)...

We have probably harvested upto 200lbs of ackee so far... im guessing there was probably 700 or so lbs. of ackee on the tree at the beginning... alot are going bad cause we cant eat them all fast enough... just giving them away

The flavor reminds me alot of cheddar cheese... or kind of similar to eggs... fatty, rich, savory flavor... yum :), a fruitarians delicacy, as these flavors are rare in the fruit world... not too many savory fruits out there, except durian and avocado

Today they brought 2 crates of cempedak, I couldnt help myself, had to get 4 to enjoy :). Also had some other fruits below:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pulasan from friend
« on: June 27, 2013, 12:53:28 PM »
Visited my friend David yesterday, and we walked in his home orchard and harvested some pulasan from a tree. He doesnt know the variety, but said that it came from a tree in the experimental station. I think these were picked a week or so early, as only a handful from the clusters were diggity dank ripe.

Very unique flavor, at first I wasnt sure I liked it, because I was probably eating a less ripe fruit, but when I bit into one of the riper fruits it tasted like buttersctoch candy, very sweet, no clinging to seed skin at all, vanilla and (oddly) mild wintergreen flavor notes in the background. Peculiar flavor for this type of fruit, I would have never expected this fruit to taste like it did, no sub acid flavor that im used to with rambutans.

I really would like to try and seebabat variety next, as I hear alot of good reviews for that fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chompajack
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:01:12 PM »
This is what we call chompajack, like a cross between cempedak and jackfruit. This fruit is from next door at friends farm, the tree is a seedling from unknown origin, but damn its a good fruit :).

This tree is about 8 years old and located in the chicken coop so it gets alot of manure from them roosting up in the tree at night. This fruit is 40lbs. pretty heavy, and we call it the "Eat All" because even most of the rag is swelled up and edible like the fruit. Huge pods, super sweet like syrup, gooey texture (I enjoy this more than crisp jackfruits.

Its alota fricken food in that one fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Durian' Cempedak
« on: January 06, 2013, 10:11:58 PM »
Here is a cempedak from a farm down the road, this has to be my favorite fruit next to durian, what an amazing flavor. Its very unique flavored fruit, somewhat like durian with its musky flavor notes. Its very sweet, soft mushy texture, somewhat juicy, relatively thin skin on a large round seed. The smell of the skin reminds me alot of some dish ive had, like chicken pot pie, a funky smell, but not sulfury like durian, just very potent. Ive been working on grafting this tree and have so far gotten one epicotyl graft.. working with other techniques to find the most suitable one.

maybe one day ill be able to provide others with grafted trees, everyone deserves to feast on this heavenly delite ;). Me thinks this tree must have been some variety originally brought over from Malaysia.

Anyways enjoy the fruit porn :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Approach Graft Question
« on: November 13, 2012, 11:37:41 PM »
Aloha Friends!,

So I have a question. Im a bit confused on approach grafting. You have your rootstock and your desired cultivar branch, for the cuts on both, are you just going deep enough to expose the cambium layer, or is it best to go deeper into the sublayers below the cambium? Like, would it be enough just to cut and peel the bark layer off (given the wood is slipping) on both rootstock and scion? Or go deeper, so that on each the expose cambium is the thin lines on the sides of the cut?

From my understanding, this graft happens naturally in nature from two similar trees rubbing up against each other, over time wearing each others bark layer off and then the cambiums start rubbing together and fuse. I havent tried any bud grafting but somewhat similar idea, of peeling the bark layer off (slips off if active) and you get the greenish cambium layer that you lay the bud chip onto.

So shouldnt it just be enough to peel bark layer off rootstock and scion and bind together?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting in Humid Enviro
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:10:16 PM »
Ok so I live in Hawaii, on the jungle side of the the Big Island and its pretty much high humidity all the time. Now im wondering if bagging or wrapping the scion after making the graft is necessary out here, or if I can just leave the graft in a partly shaded area to heal. Would bagging be worthwhile here? I know ive had problems with scions rotting in the past and that has been why ive had low success.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cempedak Tree Question
« on: October 05, 2012, 04:39:15 PM »
So there is a cempedak tree on my friends property, seedling from another cemp tree that is simply exquisite. The tree that the seedling came from has one of the most sublime, stoning tastes of the few cemps ive tried, I rate it up there with some of the better durians Ive had. Now my friend planted a seedling from that fruit , and its grown over the past 8 years into a 40 foot tall tree... Last year was its first year fruiting and it set a good number of sausage shaped fruits, roughly 1.5 feet long, but most of the fruits were all rag, no pods. and the few fruits that had pods there was only 1-2 pods per fruit.

Now it fruited again this year, loaded with 50-60 good sized fruits, and the same thing... most of them all rag, some with a few scant pods for eating.

Now we are hoping it just has to set in before really fruiting properly, but im also thinking maybe its not getting good pollination to develop pods?

Anyone out there familiar with this issue? Ive read in malaysia they hand pollinate them to get get pod to rag ratio, but cant really find any info on this.

Is this tree going to eventually get comfy and produce good fruits?

more info on the mother tree the seedling came from: this one also tends to not be fully loaded with pods, some smaller fruits ive had off of it there were only 3-4 pods, where it had room for like 10-14. Not to say they all are more scant, I had a large one recently and it had 25 pods or so.
