Yea David only uses approach grafting with durian. .

My first ever attempt at grafting durian I got 3/6 take with cleft graft on 1 yo seedling s. The scion were unprepared I just tipped them before wrapping in para film.  I don't believe they are a hard tree to graft. . Make clean cuts on young vigorous root stock and scion

Anyone ever done it? I have a few hundred durian that I'm going to attempt these two methods on... leaning more towards bud grafting as durian seeds stock is limited in Hawaii...I don't want to kill any of my rootstock through my grafting attempts. I'll keep this thread alive over the next few months with my attempts

Mike the fruit from the seedling is very good...  very buttery,  creamy,  relatively thick,  with butterscotch  overtones...Some bitterness.

it's encouraging  to see a seedling bearing such superb fruit...  the aril  is pretty good size too do good flesh recovery..  the owner said she planted  it froma tree from the experimental station in Hilo  back in 1980..  very large tree now roughly 65  feet tall  and large spread...

she says all she feeds it is mulch ed  cuttings from her other trees

gotcha oscar, im actually looking forward to a long rainy period as a few of my trees got real sun burnt... I notice sun burning on some citrus, a few abiu and a few akee tree... do you have any suggestions? Im going to buy some 70-80% shade clothe and was thinking of putting that around the trees for a bit... I do this for my durian and cempedak and the cempedak really grow alot faster in super heavy shade...

yes it's in the puna jungle on the big island. Im  having to clear alot of trees using a chainsaw and machete.  the greased durian is from a friend named David frenz,  in Hilo.  he owns a small nursery and grafts Thai and Malay durio  varieties

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: ACKEE Bumper Crop !

my friend accidentally ate an un ripe, not all the way opened akee, and felt nauseous and threw up eekk! Ive learned that they arent really fully ripe until their texture is squishy...

In cases of fruit that can potentially cause death, I would encourage having someone experienced in ackee cleaning show you how to do it the first time.  I was fortunate to have a Jamaican gentleman who demonstrated the procedure in exchange for half the crop.  I would have given him the whole thing!

I'm not sure what you mean by "fully ripe".  Once the shell of the fruit opens, even a small crack as shown in the second picture, sunlight will reduce the hypoglycin to safe levels.  As Oscar mentioned, the seeds (and the smaller aborted seeds) are always poisonous.   As the arils are somewhat folded, it is important to smooth out the arils from the interior side to insure that all pinkish strands are removed.  I like to rinse them under running water, air dry them for half an hour or so, and then freeze them for later use.

I detect a pleasant, nutty flavor to the cooked arils.  While the uncooked arils are safe to eat, the flavor is rather bland.

yes we do all of this...  eating only the yellow,  no red jacket or aborted seeds.  but,  even opened fruit that have just opened well contain small amounts of the poison,  you must either remove the arils  from the fruit and let ripen more till they are soft in texture,  or wait till the fruit is yawned opened all the way,  to consume raw...I  would never cook them they taste fine raw and contain more nutrients  raw.

But we have found a method that really works well... You harvest all the opened pods... , take out all the arils and place them in a bin in the fridge... over a week they will go from crunchy or rubbery texture to a very soft cream cheese texture... totally ripe, no hypoglycin (which actually has a recognizable flavor, to me, very similar to soap lol, or so bitter chemical taste... dont wanna eat that)

They are really lovely fresh off the tree when yawned opened all the way... have a squishy cheddar cheese texture... but for safety, you can fridge them and just feel them each day for when they go really soft like cream cheese..

Another advantage is that no mold will grow on the fruit... when sitting in the pod in a humid environment they tend to mold and go bad before fully ripe

My friends got 2 ackee trees... they seem to fruit twice a year... but one is just going berzerk.. totally loaded.. He is old and cant climb the trees to get them, so he lets me keep half of whatever I harvest ;)...

We have probably harvested upto 200lbs of ackee so far... im guessing there was probably 700 or so lbs. of ackee on the tree at the beginning... alot are going bad cause we cant eat them all fast enough... just giving them away

The flavor reminds me alot of cheddar cheese... or kind of similar to eggs... fatty, rich, savory flavor... yum :), a fruitarians delicacy, as these flavors are rare in the fruit world... not too many savory fruits out there, except durian and avocado

btw I have 7 grafted durian planted at my place, including one red prawn.... THe red prawn is doing the best... I didnt know about shade clothing when I first put them out and they got hurt a bit, but most have recovered and are sporting green leaves... they are all stalled on growing though... its been pretty sunny this summer... I think they will get some relief when the rainy season comes...

Ive got hem all shade clothed... I have another grafted chanee in my nursery that im going to up pot to 7 gal and raise it in more shade before putting in out in the field.. I think durian are really sensitive and if they go out in the field too early they cant take the sun... they are an understory tree i their natural habitiat...
