Hi Xue,
Is grafting guava now better than in Spring?

Sam,
Spring is always best. But I graft all year long.

Crystal seedless guava...A short bushy tree...but yields a lot of fruit.  Xue made this tree for me and I finally got it planted in the ground this year.
Well worth it.  Xue always delivers great quality scions too.

I received mine today in good condition, good packaging, and already wrapped with buddy tapes; thanks a lot Xue!

I've had good success with just cleft graft on guava.  What grafting method do you guys like best for guava?

Most of my guava cleft grafts have flattened graft unions, meaning poor graft unions.
Now I prefer bark graft.

Is there a better way than cleft when scion and rootstock thickness is the same?
Flattening cleft unions just means the scion is growing or thickening faster than the rootstock.
This may be temporary and the union will grow round later when the rootstock catches up.

Exactly. Most guavas have flattened graft unions for the first year. But eventually they catch up. I have some several year old guava cleft grafts where the graft union is barely discernible any more.

I've also had good success with whip & tongue graft on guava.  Grafted Crystal Seedless and Crystal on Ruby Supreme and Psidium Guineense.

Are there two different Crystal guavas???  What's the leave shape of your Crystal guava?

My Crystal guava has round leaves.  I got my Crystal and Pearl scions from someone in SoCal.
I'm assuming it's from Taiwan because his two other guavas are Pearl and Century .
He said the Crystal is near seedless, crisp, very sweet, sets fruit poorly and has compact growth.

Xue's Crystal Seedless guava has normal pointed leaves.  Same as what I saw from tropical bonsai nursery.

You may have mislabeled your Crystal Seedless. There is also the Seedless guava which has the rounder leaves. I have both grafted and the Seedless guava has the round leaf.

Here's my Crystal Seedless from xshen.

Thank you for the photos Kaz.  Is you Seedless guava crisp, very sweet, sets fruit poorly and has compact growth?
If it's not as good as Crystal, then I don't really have space for it.

I have not had any fruits on either one yet so I couldn't tell you. I may have one flower starting on the Crystal Seedless.

Brad, Sak Ip is suppose to be the best, I have one grafted Sak Ip (1-1/2yrs old) which has flowers/fruits now. I should be able to compare the taste of the fruit with my Kohala this year.
