I like it as a soup, eaten alone or with rice.  Easy and fast to make.

I grafted Sabor onto cherimoya rootstock a little over 2 months ago.  No new leaves, but about 10 or so flower buds have emerged.

First time I've seen this, so wanted to know if this is common.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Purple Star Apple (Caimito)
« on: January 11, 2017, 09:11:59 PM »
I reached out to Jacob a few months ago and he said that tree died.  Below is his response:

"That Star apple tree that you're referring to lived for many years. It flowered all the time and grew to about 6 feet tall. It was a beautiful tree. It even fruited a few times but none of the fruit made it all the way to maturity. When I transplanted one year, it didn't like it and died shortly thereafter. I think that they can definitely be grown in Southern California."

I have sandy soil covered in tree trimmers mulch, which is fairly moist from the rain we've been getting.  I divert overflow from my rainwater tanks to different areas of the garden (in between trees) hoping to saturate the soil in preparation for the dry season.  Is this worth the effort or should I be concerned about leaching??

Does anyone know where I can get some suckers/slips? Adam no longer sells them.
Thanks

Simon and everyone,

Is anyone willing to sell me one of their grafted Mexican Garcinia?

I'm not sure if this is sufficient for what you're looking for, but this Avocado Variety List maintained by UCR has quite a few avocado varieties with a picture of the fruit and leaves.

How does the exchange work?  I assume participants have to be CRFG members,  correct?  What if I don't have anything worthy to exchange?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: how do bananas work?
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:29:15 PM »
Zahra,

Based on my limited experience with namwa bananas in zone 10, it takes about 18 - 24 months to fruit from planting a transplanted sucker and 12 - 18 months to fruit if the plant was never transplanted.   I think it's primarily age since I have some neglected plants that are small in size but still fruit, albeit a poor quality bunch.  In terms of suckers, I leave 1 - 2 per mother plant and remove the rest.1

Hi BC,

I was previously advised by Millet it is OK for seeds to be shipped to California, but let's wait for him or someone else to chime in to confirm this.  Thanks for offering.

I'm looking for Poncirius trifoliata or Flying Dragon seeds if anyone has them available.

Thanks,

James

Ok, so who has a good selection that can eventually be distributed for grafting purposes?  I would like to know what options are out there in terms of already-tested seedling varieties that are worthwhile.

http://rfcarchives.org.au/Next/Fruits/Jakfruit/KwaiMuk11-87.htm

I have an excellent one Jeff , I remember seeds took a long time to germinate ...

I got seeds from you Luc, in November, and 2 of 5 seeds are just now starting to send out the radicle.  No special treatment on the seeds, and ambient SoCal temps.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitanga/pitangatuba spacing for hedges
« on: April 23, 2016, 06:20:00 AM »
I'd like to start a couple of privacy hedges, one with pitanga and the the other with pitangatuba.   I've read the pitanga spacing should be 3 to 5 ft.  Can anyone comment on the ideal spacing for each and how to best force the lateral growth habit?

Thanks.

Received mine yesterday as well.  Thanks.

Unique and interesting taste I've never experienced before; it is like cotton dipped in sugar water as someone described.  My kids seem to like it.  Some funky looking seeds though.

I clarified with Luc and he said seeds

I got the laboratory roll, because I couldn't find that other one in the Netherlands. It works fine, I now do all my grafting with it. I cut strips of it, 1cm wide and accross the width of the big roll. First I strech it and wrap it two times, then I wrap it while twisting it (I just keep my hand in the same position and circle around the graft) to apply tight pressure on the graft, and then I come back to the same area, stretch the rest of the tape and wrap the scion in it to seal it. Works great.

I also use the Parafilm M and it works fine.  I believe it was a bit cheaper than the Parafilm nursery grafting tape when I was looking into it.  Just need to cut it into strips like how Solko described, which might be a hassle for some.

23
Yup, already tried Adam as well.  No dice.  I'll try again next year.  Thanks for trying.

24
Thanks Sayyid.  I'm under the impression that his scion sale ended.

25
Not sure if it's too late in the season to graft but want to give it a shot anyways.

Looking for Na Dai and/or Big Red sugar apple scions, along with white and/or Genova Red ilama scions.

I'm in Southern CA (Cypress) but willing to deal with shipping/traveling.

Thanks.
