At my local store, maybe yours, too. Also, good buys on weed killer.

Citrus General Discussion / Picture request
« on: March 14, 2018, 06:55:54 PM »
I'd like to see some in-ground, mature trees on Flying Dragon. I was planning on adding a couple of trees on C-35 but with the encroaching Asian citrus psyllid I'm thinking I could maybe enclose a smaller tree.

Citrus General Discussion / Bay Flora Nursey in CA no longer selling citrus
« on: February 23, 2018, 04:07:28 PM »
A note on their front page says due to Asian Citrus Psyllid quarantine. I kept putting off ordering a couple of trees, ya snooze, ya lose. Few mail order sources left here and those can't ship outside their quarantine area.

Citrus General Discussion / A tale of two Mandarins
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:44:06 PM »
In my yard are two Owari Satsuma Mandarin trees. They were planted at the same time, sometime in the seventies. They came from the same source, a farmer who intended to plant an orchard but lost financing and ended up selling off the trees.

One tree is planted on the east side of the house about five feet from the wall. The other, planted on the west side of the house, is about four feet west of the driveway. Neither gets supplemental water and probably never has, nor are they ever fertilized.

The tree on the east side of the house produces fruit with a thin, tight rind that peels cleanly, leaving very little pith. Fruit from the tree on the west side of the house has a thick, puffy, loose rind that leaves a lot of pith when peeled.

The fruit from the tree on the east side of the house is sweeter than the fruit from the tree on the west side.

Within thirty-five feet of the east side tree is a navel orange and a grapefruit tree. The west side tree is fifty feet from those trees and eighty feet from a lemon tree in a yard further to the west.

The tree on the east side is not shaded from the east and gets full pre-noon sun. The tree on the west side is fifteen feet from the house next door, aligned with the back wall, and gets a lot of sun throughout the day.

What could account for the differences in the fruit from the two trees?

Citrus General Discussion / Which size tree to buy?
« on: June 17, 2017, 07:42:37 PM »
Is it better to buy a small tree (5-7 gallon) or a larger one (15-25 gallon)? Will a smaller tree grow faster, relatively, once put in the ground and "catch up" to a larger tree? Would a larger (and thereby older) tree give edible fruit sooner? I'm talking about a Moro on C-35.

Thanks,

gary

Citrus General Discussion / Chelated iron
« on: April 11, 2017, 07:56:12 PM »
A neighbor's 2-year-in-the ground Gold Nugget, on Flying Dragon, appears to show signs of iron deficiency. Can someone recommend a good chelated iron product?

Citrus General Discussion / Recommend a blood orange/rootstock combination
« on: February 26, 2017, 04:49:25 PM »
My neighbor wants a blood orange tree. I haven't paid much attention to blood oranges so I don't know the pluses and minuses of each variety. Which do you prefer and why? Which rootstock? A mature tree height of about 12-15 feet would be preferred. Northern San Joaquin Valley, California; USDA zone 9a/Sunset zone 14.

Does it degrade citrus quality to store it in a refrigerator?

Citrus General Discussion / Sour Gold Nugget
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:45:13 PM »
Last year I gave some friends a Gold Nugget on Flying Dragon. It had three fruit on it this year and they're sour. I don't think it gets enough light. Could the taste be due to lack of light or is it a function of the age of the tree?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / April 1 and 2 in Miami
« on: March 19, 2016, 03:04:31 AM »
Some friends from California will have April 1 and 2 in Miami, waiting to ship out on a cruise on the 3rd. Anything tropical fruit-wise they should check out? Anything ripe and available?

When they return a week later they'll rent a car and drive from Miami to New Port Richie to visit family - anything interesting on they way they should check out?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Edward mango in a container?
« on: April 10, 2013, 02:11:54 AM »
Could an Edward mango tree be grown and kept in a container or is it just to vigorous?

Thanks,

I'm not very adventurous in the foods I eat but I like growing things. I started following this forum thinking I might try growing some tropical fruits.

I was about to order a couple of mango trees, a lychee, and a couple of dragon fruits and decided I should try a mango (never had one before) before sending off my order.

I bought one at the grocery store, no variety listed, just "Product of Brazil".

Well, I tried it. Not sure I care for it.

It doesn't seem to fit within the realm of flavors I'm accustomed to. It had a mild cantaloupe smell and some peach-like flavor. It also had as light chemical taste at first bite. It had no tartness.

Is this the "general" mango flavor (tropical?) or are there varieties that will immediately delight my "raised on peaches, bananas, apples, cherries. strawberries, boysenberries and cantaloupe" taster, but something uniquely "mango"?

I think all of those have unique flavors. Peaches taste like peaches, not a little like strawberries, but their "sweet" is similar. This particular mango's "sweet" seems different. I also don't particularly like the "sweet" of Mexican pastries.

Thanks,

gary
