You can start adding a thick layer of mulch and organics around the tree to promote
good nematodes which will help keep the bad nematodes in check. This past year I have been
adding a layer of peat, cricket frass, and coffee grounds around all my mulberries and
I have noticed a huge difference in their growth. Also looks like a banner year for fruit
production.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help about scions
« on: February 24, 2024, 02:27:08 PM »
Probably not
If the scions are wrapped and placed in a sealed baggie 2-3 weeks.
If you have no other alternative than try it and when you cut the scion you
can tell if they are still green.
I would soak the scions when they arrive

Not sure I would want to do that much work for an unproven seedling?
I have not tried to air layer a mango but have heard they don't do well long term
Probably something to do with not having a tap root?
If your seedling proves to be something special why wouldn't you
grow a seedling and graft a scion from your old seedling?
There are so many exceptional mangos available. Whenever you
buy a mango from the nurseries you buy a grafted tree not an
air layer. Anyway if you are determined to air layer your tree, Usually
Spring is the best time. If you air layer a branch it may cause your
seedling to flower

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why cant i get mango seeds to germinate!?
« on: February 11, 2024, 11:31:16 AM »
I remove the husk from the seed and wrap in damp paper towel and
place in a baggie. When it germinates plant level with soil root down.
You may want to keep more toward 80F if possible

GREAT!!!
How tall is the tree?
What did you do 2 years ago when we had back to back night freezes.

I finally got an escarlate to fruit this year and it's interesting.
I heard they had thicker skin but my fruit had thin skin like the red.
I would describe it as a very sweet red.
As far as the best tasting one it's the same as picking the best mango.
Everyone has their own opinion. For me though it's hard to beat the
red. Thin skin, great flavor and if you eat them early they have a little balance
of sweet and sour and they fruit constantly. I have 4 large trees and there is
fruit on at least one tree almost all the time. My restinga also has a unique
flavor. I also have a M gauciqua that has had a few fruit on it. They tasted like a
lemon drop candy. I wish I could get a handful of fruit. The damn tree flowers
heavy in the Winter and they fruit don't set with the cool dry air. I also have a couple
M strigipes that flower the same time but I have only had a couple fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can this Lil Gem hold fruit?
« on: January 28, 2024, 08:10:08 AM »
The tree might not even hold fruit this year
Then you don't have to make a decision
I have a Venus in the ground that is flowering the same size
and so far it's not holding fruit
The most common practice is to remove the fruit when it's marble
size, leave the panicles until April and then remove. The tree won't
waste energy reblooming and then you'll get the whole growing season
devoted to growth.

Are the white sapote you are selling, seeds or scions?
They are scions
I do have allot of small fruit and flowers on the Super Sweet and Youghan's gold
now. Hopefully no frost will screw it up like the past two years. Should have seeds
around June if all goes well

Escarlate has been hard for me to grow in the past.
Is your PH low on your soil and what is the PH of the water you use?
I was talking to a forum member and he had the same problem with
his Red jabos and he changed the soil out and it's made a dramatic
difference. He went with pine fines and peat mix.

I have a sugarlata seedling that produces large fruit every year without hand pollination.
It is a cross of the sugar apple and custard apple by John Painter
Delicious fruit
Also I have a seedling Isan Indigo that produces very tasty fruit with berry flavors
My favorite atemoya I have tried is  Lisa

I have raised over 100 sugar apples from seeds and I have never
had a seedling grow up and be a different color or different flesh?
I have sold thousands of seeds and no one has told me that the type
of sugar apple I sold them grew up and was different .  YET

I traded for 10 Big Red seeds and I kept two and both produced red fruit
and as far as I know the other 8 trees I gave away were also true.
I never heard different
I have a red Thai I grew from seed and the fruit is red. I also have an
Isan Indigo that I grew from seed and it produces red easy peal fruit.
I raised a seedling from it's seeds and it produces red easy peal fruit.
I also currently have three green Na Dai and green Thai Lessard, Thai red,
Isan Indigo, in my yard and none of the trees have ever produced an
odd colored or odd fleshed fruit. I have never hand pollinated any of the
trees and every year they produce true fruit like their parent

I lost some trees in the freeze a couple years ago but I am currently raising
big eyes from two different sources and two select Thai varieties. I should
get fruit from them in a couple years. Sugar apples have grown true for me so far.
Maybe if I hand pollinated I could change the results?

Is your tree a seedling or an air layer?
This will influence the time before flowering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Evaluation of Shipped Mango Tree

Would have been nice if it was at least mentioned when you ordered it.
Even if you ordered it online when it was shipped someone should have
called?
It looks great otherwise. If you keep it make sure you keep a good stake in it
until it heals over. It could be a weak area and a strong wind might snap it.
